I read this morning on Max Boxing that Marc Ratner, long-time executive director of the Nevada State Athletic Commission told them he looked up the regulation and confirmed that in situations like the one on Saturday night, the ruling is discretionary, so there is no automatic disqualification.jamesmcdonnell wrote:This may be true, but the rules governing boxing are pretty specific in that the cornermen may not enter the ring during the round.Mattyp151 wrote:If they do rule a DQ, Boxing will do itself no favors. Where was Floyd during the whole melee? In the corner to start, and then you don't see him anywhere in the fight. You're going to even contemplate DQing Floyd for doing what he was supposed to? Ban, fine, suspend Roger in Vegas or anywhere else, but to penalize Floyd for something he didn't even get involved in would be foolish. Boxing doesn't need another black mark.boxerrob2005 wrote:i thought mayweather was going to be dq but glad he wasnt because he was winning the fight easily. barrea got dq against junior jones when his corner entered the ring just before the end of round 5, although i think they were pulling him out anyways because he was being pounded.
it looked as if we were going to have a repeat of bowe-golota riot but the police did a good job in cooling it off quickly before anyone else joined in.
I don't think they will declare it a DQ (which the ref or ringside officials should have done immediately), but they should definetly ban floyd Sr for a while.

Forrest is a good call, size, power, excellent jab, but who would bet against Floyd finding a way to win?lirva33 wrote:Actually that's not the style to beat Floyd. The style to beat him is a tall fighter with a good jab who has power and a chin and skills....
Vernon Forest.
It's similar to Roy vs Tarver or Mosley vs Forrest. Now, both were on the slide but that tall compact defence coupled with power and solid skills and a chin is the recipy to beat Floyd as well. Forrest can lead and can counter and has every punch in the book. Other than him, I'd take Floyd over most, Mayorga, Mosley, DLH, Boldomir, Margarito etc.
I can't say the same for Hatton.

If you look at Floyd's record, he's never carried great power. Of his 24 KO's, 4 were true KO's, and I'll give him knocking down Corrales 5 times as an impressive show of power. But, he has never pushed himself as a KO guy, and has shown he can win fights without KOing the world. I think Tszyu would struggle with Floyd's speed, as he did with Judah in round 1. Had Judah kept up that fight vs Tszyu the way he fought round 1, we'd be talking about a huge upset by Floyd this past weekend. I see Floyd following a similar gameplan, except being able to follow through for an entire fight.

Precisely, Pernell Whittaker didn't have a lot of power, but it didn't stop him toying with Chavez.
I think Mayweather is deceptively strong, not as much brute strength as Tszyu or Hatton, but very good elastic strength and effective use of athleticism. Having a fighting brain like Mayweather's offsets physical advantages in any case. What would Hatton do when his plan to crowd and pressure Mayweather was met with rapid counters which jerked his head back repeatedly, what would his plan B be? Hatton is effective at what he does, but nowhere near as versatile as his hero Roberto Duran was.

If fighting just about the best fighters at each division is cherry picking I wish more fighters did it... Mayweather tried to get Hatton at 140 but Hatton wasn't interested...Terence wrote:I'm a huge PBF fan, very talented and a lovely fighter to watch. Corrales effectively fits the criteria of "a tall fighter with a good jab who has power..." and he got smashed to fook by Mayweather. I cant see anyone outboxing Mayweather - he is the master of ringmanship. Forrest looked great against Mosely, but how many years ago was that? Mayorga smashed him bad in their first fight and at present Forrest has no recent form to speak of.lirva33 wrote:Actually that's not the style to beat Floyd. I watched Forrest fight Elco Garcia, and he was giving Vernon all he could handle. Vernon was probably gonna get the decision, but a weird string of events where a real KD was ruled a slip and Forrest popped back up and hit Garcia when he wasn't looking. Garcia went down, the ref covered him up and called it off.liamlion wrote:Corrales effectively fits the criteria of "a tall fighter with a good jab who has power..." and he got smashed to fook by Mayweather. Tszyu spanked Judah and that's that. Tszyu was a precise master boxer who was focused and intelligent enough to make adjustments, before finding the measure of his man and lowering the boom. That he could do it so concisely vs a man as physically gifted as Judah is a testament to how fucing good he was. Prime Tszyu would be a very nasty proposition for Mayweather.

Judah was taking it to Tszyu in the first, you can't question that. Even moreso than he did to Floyd. However, Judah inexplicably came out in the 2nd a different fighter. Floyd could keep up what Zab did in the first for the entire 12, Zab would've given in and gone for a KO eventually.viciousmaussa wrote:Tszyu spanked Judah and that's that. Corales has a poor defense and suspect chin unlike forest and tarver who's chins are not as bad as corrales and can hold a shot.liamlion wrote:Corrales effectively fits the criteria of "a tall fighter with a good jab who has power..." and he got smashed to fook by Mayweather. He's also not as well schooled as forest or tarver and relys on his power to get him through fights.
He's also not as smart and can't make adjustments.

In fairness Zab was getting timed towards the end of the first. Tszyu figured him out. Have to give him credit.Mattyp151 wrote:Judah was taking it to Tszyu in the first, you can't question that. Floyd is a different kettle of fish altogether though.
Tszyu's performance was a masterclass of swift, brutal, clean efficiency. Tszyu was well covered for the Judah jab, and after a few scores from Zab, Kostya read, and then took away, the powerful Zab left. That was the crucial move in the fight. He found the right positioning to take the punch away, and after that Zab didn't know what to do when Tszyu showed that he'd found the measure of him early. Tszyu had marvellous spatial awareness, and after taking Zab's best stuff away about 2 mins into the first round, it was all downhill for Judah. Speaking of economy, how's 2 knockdowns from one punch?Mattyp151 wrote:Judah was taking it to Tszyu in the first, you can't question that. Even moreso than he did to Floyd. Yes, Mayweather's very fast, very clever, an impressive athlete and very well shooled. But I still think he's being overrated for what he's done above 130
