Hearn: Golovkin Can Fight Jacobs Next if No Canelo Rematch

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Eddie Hearn hopes Billy Joe Saunders defeats David Lemieux on December 16.

Despite his contentious relationship with allegedly, Saunders’ promoter, Hearn knows Saunders would welcome a trip to Brooklyn to battle Daniel Jacobs, as long as the money is right. If Lemieux wins, Hearn suspects it’ll be more difficult to get him to fight Jacobs next.

That’s because Hearn, Jacobs’ promoter, expects Golden Boy Promotions to save Lemieux (38-3, 33 KOs) for the winner of the Canelo Alvarez-Gennady Golovkin rematch if Montreal’s Lemieux beats England’s Saunders (25-0, 12 KOs) to win the WBO middleweight championship next month in Laval, Quebec. Oscar De La Hoya’s promotional company represents Alvarez and Lemieux.

Regardless, Hearn has already told Tom Loeffler, Golovkin’s promoter, that Jacobs (33-2, 29 KOs) is ready to fight Golovkin again if Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KOs) can’t get an immediate rematch against Alvarez.

“I think the winner of that [Saunders-Lemieux] fight against Danny Jacobs is a natural fight as well,” Hearn said during the most recent episode of CompuBox TV’s “Inside Boxing Live” podcast. “Our concern is if Lemieux wins, they’ll try and hold him up for the winner of Canelo and Golovkin. But I said to Tom Loeffler the other day, ‘Listen, if Canelo-Golovkin doesn’t happen, we’re ready to go with Jacobs-Triple-G 2.’

“So again, we wanna be in control of our own destiny. We not really waiting on anyone. We wanna get our date, know that Danny Jacobs can have four, five weeks off with his family, enjoy his Christmas and get straight back into camp. I think that’s important for any fighter, to have a strategy and a plan and a schedule, rather than just waiting for a call that might take three or four months to come. That’s very disheartening to be so inactive, and the plan with Danny Jacobs is to be as busy as possible.”

The WBC has mandated a rematch between Canelo and Golovkin. Alvarez also has a rematch clause, but it's entirely possible (but unlikely) that they won't fight again anytime soon if GBP & K2 can't agree terms.

GGG also has mandatories to perform against the likes of Sergiy Derevyanchenko (IBF) and Jermall Charlo (WBC).

Gennady could also consider facing the winner of Saunders-Lemieux to add the WBO belt to his collection.

Demetrius Andrade has also signed with HBO and he’s rated third, behind Canelo and Jacobs in the WBA’s rankings.

The WBA have not yet ordered a bout between Golovkin and Murata. They are unlikely to do so in the short-term, given the fact the Kazakh has only recently performed a mandatory defence of his WBA belt.

Whilst Daniel Jacobs has recently signed a contract with HBO, becoming GGG’s network stablemate, Abel Sanchez has flaty-refused to consider the possibility of Golovkin engaging in a rematch in the short-term against him. He said the fight won't happen unless the American earns his opportunity.

Basically, Gennady Golovkin has lots of options to consider and obligations to perform. So I don’t expect to see a bout between GGG and Jacobs take place during 2018.

Yeah, unless Jacobs gets the WBO belt or becomes a mandatory in one of the other 3 orgs, he will need to wait in a long line.

I'd rather see Charlo than either rematch, but this would definitely be better than most.

Canelo rematch

Although it pains me that golovkin has to give canelo another shot, but that’s still the fight

If not then wipe out Saunders would be my next option

Screw a Jacob's rematch. Was a close but clear victory for GGG.

Yeh apart from Canelo. I take no1 wants to see GGG in rematches that he clearly won. Right now I don't think GGG needs to waste time on rematching guys he beat.. BJS, Charlo and whoever else wants to go next.

I agree: Golovkin has no time for rematches. He needs to get the last belt, beat Charlo and try beating the best SMW, whoever it is at that time.
