Fernando Vargas

Post by Taansend »

Funny how no-one mentions him anymore.

He's not even 40 yet but seems to be a forgotten man.

When he fought De La Hoya my then fiance recorded it and I showed it on the ship I was working on a week later. The staff mess was PACKED. Great atmosphere.

He was an exciting fighter to watch, he was pretty much a shot fighter by the time he was 27 though.

He was a great fighter with a fitting nickname - ferocious. I don’t think he’s involved in the game anymore though. I‘m not sure what he’s up to

He was training someone fairly recently. That winky fight portrayed as a robbery is bullshit.

I agree, very competitive fight but the right man won it.

Vargas clearly won the last two rounds. That edged it for me. Close fight, I don't think winky ever got screwed.

Yeah in boxing you can't last that long when you're shot. In MMA a lot of the top guys are shot and still competing at the top. Bisping a good example.

So many different variations of combat involved. A shot boxer, not when it's their chin, is just a split second off with the timing. That's why they feel so great in the gym for the comebacks. Then fight night the mind and body are no longer in sync.

Does he? I would have thought he would have stayed in the Oxnard area. I used to live near there and love it.

Didn't he have major health issues with his thyroid (or was that an excuse for his weight gain). If it was no excuse then that could have had major impact on his boxing levels.

Was suposed to comeback for Mayorga about 4-5 years ago surely now.... glad that didn't happen.

I was coming back from California on a family holiday and stopped off for 2 nights in Chicago before catching the flight home.
My 12 year old son and I left the others in the hotel after breakfast and sat outside on the steps watching the world go by.
I was looking about and 2 or 3 guys came out the hotel wearing track suits and sat not far from us. I had a glance over and I thought one of them was the spitting image of Fernando Vargas.
I shouted over what I was thinking , and they burst out laughing because it WAS Vargas !
My abiding memory was the fact that they couldn't believe someone from the UK had heard of him. They were stunned.
Anyway my boy ran away to get his baseball cap and had it autographed just as the taxi came to take them to their training base.
I'll need to take a look at his record to work out the exact date.

It wasn't Mayorga I mean then, yes they did fight - there was another guy.... I remember it being set and everything - Vargas was absolutely massive in the press conferences. It was after the Mayorga fight. Probably around the 2011 mark.

One of my favourite ever fighters. Never ducked anyone and win or lose fought like a warrior. Saw him in Vegas when over for Frampton-Santa Cruz II, just had to get a photo. Top guy Vargas.
