Steve gray vs Ancajas last night
Not grays best performance
Re: Steve gray vs Ancajas last night
The post should read Steve Gray and Jamie Conlin v Ancajas!
Re: Steve gray vs Ancajas last night
I really like Gray as a ref but that was a strange performance last night.
Re: Steve gray vs Ancajas last night
He was definitely doing his best to help Conlon. If Conlon didn't have previous for getting up off the floor and winning I reckon Gray would've stopped the fight earlier.

I missed the fight, was at a family wedding. I did get back in time for Frampton's fight. I enjoy fights with a lot of KD's, so when I get home tonight, I will give this a nice watch on Youtube.

Wish we had impartial referees, they try their best to save home fighters, it's fooking silly! The fella who carried Cleverly is the worst example.

When refs do this they are at times sustaining the beating the home fighter is taking.
Re: Steve gray vs Ancajas last night
Yep. It’s one thing having a brave corner or boxer but having a brave ref in the ring can be dangerous.jameswilson wrote: ↑19 Nov 2017, 10:44 When refs do this they are at times sustaining the beating the home fighter is taking.
Re: Steve gray vs Ancajas last night
Gray gave Ancajas more problems than Conlan did.
Deducting points for clean bodyshots, not calling a knockdown a knockdown twice. Conlan was practically begging for help at the end going down from a shot to the side of the head, and motioning that he was hit in the back of the head.
I came into the fight with a ton of respect for Conlan, and left the fight with a little less because of the way the ref was helping him, and the way he seemed to be relying on it.
Conlan still showed a lot of heart to keep getting up from knockdowns, but I'd rather have seen him just headbutt the guy or hit him in the balls or something instead of looking to the ref for a helping hand.

Thought the beating he let farrell get against Davis was far worse
Re: Steve gray vs Ancajas last night
Steve Gray is the best referee in the UK IMO. When I see him in there I feel confident there will be no b*llsh!t.
However that low blow which wood hall call wasn't low to me.
As other said he gives Ancajas more problems than Conlan. It really was a gross mismatch.

Steve Gray and Victor Loughlin have been my two favourite refs for a while now. But that's both of them had a notably poor performance recently.Naandrew wrote: ↑19 Nov 2017, 15:21 Steve Gray is the best referee in the UK IMO. When I see him in there I feel confident there will be no b*llsh!t.

VL in the Sexton/Cornish bout if I remember right)
I suppose they are only human and will have a bad night, but it has certainly been out of character

Loughlin was disgraceful in the Jason Welborn v Marcus Morrison fight earlier in the year. At least three times that should have been waved off.
Re: Steve gray vs Ancajas last night
I didn't see that one. I don't know what's happened with the 2 of them, I really wouldn't have expected performances like that from either ref. I'm sure I've read a few other reports on here of Gray F'king up in other bouts I hadn't seenNaandrew wrote: ↑19 Nov 2017, 15:46davie wrote: ↑19 Nov 2017, 15:43Steve Gray and Victor Loughlin have been my two favourite refs for a while now. Re: Steve gray vs Ancajas last night
It did seem to me that Gray was being harsh In deducting a point for blows which didn’t look particularly low. To be fair though, Ancajas did look apologetic and touched gloves with Conlan afterwards, so maybe they were a bit lower than they looked on tv?
Regardless, Conlan was miles out of his depth last night and I’m surprised he even lasted as long as he did.

Ancajas looking apologetic I believe was just him realizing that he was in a situation where he was the visitor, and the deck was stacked against him, and it wasn't gonna do him any favors to further piss off the referee, and have him looking for reasons even more to give him a hard time.
Re: Steve gray vs Ancajas last night
I like Gray and being a referee under the spotlight can't be easy , but I don't recall seeing a ref ever wipe too much vaseline off of a cut before .
Normally sent back to the corner .
Not that it would have changed the course of the fight in anyway .

Just watched fight.Only noted one knockdown not called due to low blow which was a good call.Think referee's give fighters more of a chance in Title fights if knockdowns from bodyshots. When Conlan was dropped with head shot ref stepped in and had seen enough.Conlan still wanted to continue.Good Call.

Re: Steve gray vs Ancajas last night
I was impressed with how Ancajas was handling it. Easy to be gracious when you know you're giving a good hiding to your opponent. He's fought in hostile situations and is good mates with Pacquiao so he has the experience and pride to be professional and not let the situation get the best of him.gilgamesh wrote: ↑19 Nov 2017, 17:07Boxerbeetle wrote: ↑19 Nov 2017, 16:06 It did seem to me that Gray was being harsh In deducting a point for blows which didn’t look particularly low. He did seem to have some choice words for gray in the ring after the fight. It was good to see him giving gray an earful about his conduct
Re: Steve gray vs Ancajas last night
one of the guys on ancajass team was with casimero when casimero celebrated enthusiastically then got attacked in argentina after knocking out some home fighter. maybe hed told ancajas to be respectful in his manner to avoid the same thing when in hostile ground. notice that immediately him and his team went to conlans team to shake hands when it was over.

X2. Seemed to put his finger straight in the cut aswell.
Re: Steve gray vs Ancajas last night
ya i saw him dig his fingers in the cut as deep as he could go, twirl them around, and laugh maniacally as he was doing so
