The Change in Billy Joe Saunders

Post by Taansend »

I've always liked BJS (I rarely dislike any athletes) but he was acting more & more of a twat up until about a year ago, both professionally & personally.

I've watched a few interviews with him recently & he seems to have matured 10 years in the last six months. I personally feel that a large part of this is Tyson Fury's problems. BJS has tried to help him & I think he's realised that you only have so long in the sport so why not make the most of it rather than just winging it.

I still only give him a 40% chance of victory against Lemieux (whom I'm also a big fan of) but it's refreshing to see him having a proper pop at the game.

Matured hugely as demonstrated by his "Do you eat flange" questioning of Michelle Joy Phelps in a Gloves Are Off interview two weeks ago. Oh and seemed really mature at the pre-fight with Monroe run-in when he was calling one guy a midget, another a queer, someone else a fag, was taking off Monroes glasses, shouting at another guy that he would fck his mother, oh and seemed equally mature when his son kicked Monroe in the balls and then BJS laughed.

smh

However, two fights back to back is an improvement in a sporting context but he has been pushed into it by Ingle who knows if left to his own devices, he will get fat as a pig again which suggests the self control has not changed and the team are planning with that in mind.

Seriously most people seem to think BJS is acting less mature as he ages. I don't know what interviews op has been watching?

Forget the daft IFLTV interviews, look at the shape he's in. Fwank, Tibbs, Booth all told him to leave London for his own good. The Sheffield boys reckon he's been incredible in training and that's from me talking to some not watching telly.

Currently this is bang on Mickey but ingrained habits are hard to break and most revert to form. BJS has all the talent in the world and you can see how clever he is and how he makes other fighters work harder than they expect to without expanding too much energy himself. HOWEVER I am pretty sure he will soon blow back up and be battling the weight again. Probably in the new year once he has done a Christmas binge.

Used to like Bill but it seems like success has gone to his head and he’s become insufferable recently.

After “Canada” Dave Lemieux has had has way with him both inside and outside the ring (insert your own joke here Stuarty30) I expect Bill to be much more humble and mature.

To be honest, my views are the opposite. I thought when he turned pro he was much more reserved etc. When he fought Eubank, it was Eubank/s who were doing all the talking - Billy going about his business.

Its since that fight he seems to have changed.

I haven't seen a change in BJS, in fact in the Monroe fight he took it too a new level, which I feel won him the fight before it had started.
However it wouldn't have improved his chances of getting invited round to Sunday dinner with your nan!

You don't think people can change?

The move to Sheffield isn't part of him maturing?

That's how I see it. He just kept getting worse and worse, in and out of the ring.

But I think he's turned a major corner.

He's always be a twat who says daft things about/to birds but he can still grow in other areas. And i think he is.

I agree, his fighting has come on but his maturity has gone back 10 years more like. Acts like an idiot at times.

He's got a stud's body now, and the skills to pay the bills as always. His jab is as good a jab as GGG's in a different way, less ramrod more pristine snap. With that in mind, the only way Lemieux can get to Saunders is stalking and knocking Billy Joe out. I don't see it, but he's got ridiculous power so who knows. Expect him to nick a decision over there.

i think ppl can change but you seem easy to convince mate. years of immature bs and now just a couple interviews convince you hes changed and is now a different person even from recently? i mean and plenty of examples already of his stuff not changing.

ill say he did get in better shape last fight but even then he didnt really look much better than usual imo. i dont mean physially but in the performance. what really was new there? lets see how he does against lem. i think bjs should win but ppl are kidding themselves if they think hes some boxing savant who should put on a schooling. his whole career hes been getting run close even if you look past the squeaker vs the russian. i think his biggest danger against lem is not necessarily the power but getting outworked in the other guys backyard.
