ESPN.com's Dan Rafael had Mayweather winning 116-112, as did The Associated Press and HBO's Harold Lederman.
De La Hoya thought he won because he landed what looked like the more effective shots. Purely boxing wise, Mayweather deserved the win. His accuracy was just amazing.
Mayweather heavily, crediting him with landing 207 of 481 punches to 122 of 587 for De La Hoya. Mayweather also landed more power punches than De La Hoya, outscoring him 138-82.
Mayweather's estranged father also thought De La Hoya did enough to win.
"I thought Oscar won the fight on points, threw more punches and was more aggressive. My son had good defense and caught a lot of his punches, but I still thought Oscar pressed enough to win the fight."
Still, De La Hoya did enough to impress at least one judge, and thought he did enough to win the fight.
"I landed the harder, crisper punches. I felt when I landed my punches I could see I was hurting him. If I hadn't pressed the fight, there would be no fight."
De La Hoya was the aggressor throughout the fight, and he managed to get through Mayweather's defenses in the early rounds as Mayweather moved away and counterpunched without great effect. Every time Mayweather went near the ropes, De La Hoya tried to trap him there and land a flurry of punches to the body and head.
De La Hoya wanted to get Mayweather into a brawl, but he was having no part of it, content to pick his spots and land counterpunches. In the fifth round, however, the fight seemed to shift into a different gear as Mayweather stood his ground and landed some hard combinations to the head.
DLH pressed the action early. Winning 4 or 5 of the first 6 rounds, then Mayweather swept the second half of the fight. Haven't scored in awhile but pretty sure I had Floyd up by 3 rounds.

3-3 after 6, 9-3 Floyd after 12. Very easy fight to score, if you favored Oscar's relentless missing in the 12th you could make it 8-4.
Yeh, I found it easy to score the fight.. I wasn't just going to give ODLH rounds for constantly missing. He connected with a lot of body shots, at one point hitting like 8 in a row. I did seem to impact Mayweather as he was defending his body more later on.. but, Mayweather was too skillful here.

i never bothered to rewatch the fight but my memory had it that those bodyshots were pretty much scuffing/slapping rather than really hurtful shots. could be wrong, it was 5.30 am and i wasn't exactly transfixed by the spectacle.

There was one point in the earlier rounds, where he cornered Mayweather.. He landed continious left hooks to the body. Not all landed, but they looked good. Didn't do much damage though. The pro-ODLH crowd cheered everytime he threw a punch, never mind landing. You can see Hopkins and Mosley jumping up to.

i just thought he rushed a lot of those clusters of shots and sacrificed leverage/power/timing just to be able to land something, even if not cleanly. like i say, it was 5.30, could be they were more effective than i remember.

I actually watched the fight over 3 days.. a few rounds each day. I'm too busy to invest a full hour to boxing after work. But I only watched it because I literally hadn't watched any highlights since it first aired. Plus, my boxing knowledge has increased in them 10 years.

I don't recall him bothering Floyd with anything. Somewhere around the 8th or 9th I thought Floyd hurt Oscar with a right.
To be honest.. Neither guy really looked hurt. I saw the shots landed which you are referring to, but Mayweather will land a nice shot and just not follow up.

I had it 117-111 Mayweather. Never got the supposed "controversy" here as is the case with a few other so called controversial bouts.
Yeh, it wasn't controversy. Yeh, some can see it differently, maybe close. The scorecard for De La Hoya was 115-113, would be reasonable..
I honestly struggles to give DLH more than 4 rounds clearly.

Did he have any clear rounds? I think 12-0 Floyd would be a better card than 7-5 Oscar.
According to 35 fans on 'Eye on the Ring', they all gave him round 2..
I watched it twice, but not since then. I'm sure that's one of the three I gave him. There was never a moment where I thought he could win past a robbery. I actually won a contest by predicting the actual scores when I predicted Floyd to win 10 rounds.

Tom Kazcmarek marked up a few weird scorecards -- that I tend to remember cuz they were so far off the mark... He had Vernon Forrest beating Shane Mosley by 5 points in their 1st fight.. Forrest won that fight by at least 10 points and I remembered thinking "That judge Kaczmarek is an idiot" when the score was read.. When he had De La Hoya beating Mayweather I wasn't shocked.
But anybody who had De La Hoya beating Mayweather saw what they wanted to see -- and not what happened... An honest judge with real integrity can absolutely HATE one of the boxers and still give him the round if he wins it by connecting with 14 punches to his opponents 13 punches... He doesn't tell himself "boxer A who I love, landed the cleaner shots -- therefore he beat boxer B who I hate in that close round."
I've seen this with many Floyd fights... Jose Luis Castillo 1... Oscar De La Hoya... Marcos Maidana 1... Manny Pacquiao... Floyd's haters look at each other dumbfounded.. "How the HELL could they give it to Floyd Gayrunner" ... If you tell them Mayweather landed more clean punches they tell you you're bloody fukking blind -- so it's best not to argue with them.. They're like people who voted for Trump -- FUKKIN' STUPID!!
If some of Floyd's dumber haters judged his fights he'd have never won a decision.
When I was watching it for some another time and tried to score, I remember, I had some hesitations in the first half of the fight, but the second one was clearly in Floyd's favour. Floyd's won that. De La Hoya showed more effort, but less success.

Never understood how people had this close.
I thought Floyd won 9 rounds.
Mayweather’s dad had ODLH winning.
Which is just retarded. I would've told my Father on camera to never speak to me again if I were Floyd. That piece of sh*t would never see a dime from me nor get another moment of my time for the rest of my life if he said something like that about me after my (at the time) career defining win.
Whether he believed it or not is irrelevant. I'd never speak against my Son like that after a major accomplishment. I don't think any Father would who's not a complete scumbag.
