Odd Title Fights

Post by Taansend »

I'm a sad boxing anorak.

I was looking at the fight this Monday between Sergey Kuzmin & Amir Mansour, in Russia, and noticed that Kuzmin had beaten Darnell "Ding-a-Ling" Wilson, who was a fun fighter to watch a few years ago.

Then I saw that Wilsons last fight was a loss to Adrian Granat, a hard punching Swedish heavyweight. So I'm looking at Granats record & I see the name Saul Farah and I'm thinking "How do I know that name?".

Then I remember that Farah, a Bolivian boxer with a 65(57)-23(17)-3, twice fought Billy Wright who is an American fighter in his 50's who fought as recently as last year. Wright, who once lost to Michael Moorer back in 1992, only fought once between 1999 & 2011 when he embarked on a world tour fighting in obscure locations such as Chile, Trinidad, Bolivia and New Zealand.

Which brings me to the point of this thread (if there is one :maybe: ). On Valentines Day in 2014 Wright, who was born in Arizona & lives in Vegas, fought Chauncey Welliver, from Spokane, Washington, for the WBC Asian Boxing Council Heavyweight & the WBC Latino Heavyweight Titles.

Which I fought was a bit weird.

I think I have a problem :verysad:

Whatever you want it to mean, mate.

In this case it's odd that two Yanks are fighting in New Zealand for a Latin & Asian title

Some of the titles are becoming absurd, didn't Wach recently win the IBF East/West Europe title?

I see that Fred Kassi, the Cameroon born American resident fought for the Republic of Poland heavyweight title last Saturday. Granted it was in Poland against a Pole but I wondered how he qualified...?

I think Mayweather defended his welter and lightmiddle titles at the same time did he not?

No, the wbc let him hold both belts for awhile but he never defended two at the same time. Leonard couldn't stand it that hearns had more titles in weight classes.

That's correct,Hearns won the WBO supermiddle title 3 days before Leonard beat Lalonde.

Funny. I remember many at the time saying it wasn't a real title.

Was the WBO title made up so Tommy could win 5 titles before Leonard ?

No but he managed to fight for a vacant world title straight after a knockout loss.

Dunno but from your question I thought you meant was the WBO itself made up for Hearns benefit :D

Hearns was the first holder of the supermiddle title, that's what made me think the weight division was new just in time for Tommy to beat Leonard to 5 titles

Just had a look and Hearns was the first ever WBO belt holder at ANY weight.

You sure? I thought he defended both against Berto? Maybe Pacquiao as well?

Edit... He defended welter and lightmiddle titles against Maidana in the rematch.

Yeah, I'm sure.
Was the Maidana rematch I think. I'll check online just now but I'm sure he defended both titles at welter and light middle
