The nephew could make a real impact in the pro game if he goes for it. One of the best prospects I've seen round there for a while.Oiky wrote:unclemickey1975 wrote:It is. Did you see my post asking which Mandy?Oiky wrote:load of divvyness if you ask me

' I was in John Rushton's Gym (Armthorpe) back in the late 80's going a session when I was really keen on being a boxer, Neil was in there training at the time getting ready for Andrew Gerrard I think.palooka wrote:Neil Malpass sometimes comes on here but rarely posts, he could have a very interesting thread and am sure would have some stories to tell.mercman wrote:I was told he coaches at some MMA place in town nowadays, dunno if that's true though.palooka wrote:From all accounts Mr Malpass still trains regularly at his home gym, he's still pretty good on the bag and hasn't lost his punch, not seen him in town for a long time though.

John Rushton seemed a top fella. I'm sure that Gym, under a pub if I recall correctly was also used by Bruce Woodcock many years ago. I cant remember now.mercman wrote:I watched that at Adwick Leisure Centre. Gerrard won it on a cut, Maplass was on top until then though. Rushton had quite a few bills at Adwick back then.mimmy123 wrote:' I was in John Rushton's Gym (Armthorpe) back in the late 80's going a session when I was really keen on being a boxer, Neil was in there training at the time getting ready for Andrew Gerrard I think.palooka wrote:

I met Mick Cowden there, a heavyweight and popped off to Newcastle with him and John as he was supposed to fighting Steve Gee. When we got there Gee was fighting Paul Lister so never fought on the card. Just got pissed instead.

Jon jo Irwin wasnt bad. Rushton didnt have much air time on tv. I think i only got 4 or 5 fights on tape. He was mainly small hall or Doncaster Dome. I think Woollass is amongst the fights I have.mercman wrote:Pete Gabbitus was arguably the best boxer Rushton had but turned him pro too early. Over matched him as well, which perhaps understandably alienated Gabbitus - who was an outstanding amateur - and who subsequently never fulfilled his potential.

Re: Paul Sykes v Lenny McLean
There was another gym if I remember correctly near Doncaster, Up Balby Road, im sure it was below another pub, if I remember correctly on the other side of the Road was Scarborough Barracks. There was another well known lad who trained there from Donny.mercman wrote:Yes, John Jo Irwin was v good, won a British title didn't he? Difference is, Irwin fulfilled his potential whereas Gabbitus arguably had the greater natural talent but never really achieved what he could or should have done.mimmy123 wrote:Jon jo Irwin wasnt bad. Hi, Mimmy
good afternoon, Merc
Bruce Woodcock trained upstairs in a small gym at The Plough on Balby Road, over from Scarborough Barracks, on the other side of the road and closer to town there was a gym underneath The Prince Of Wales, we all learned to box there and at The Tadcaster Arms in Armthorpe. One of the things I remember is how very steep and dangerous the cellar steps were, I was more scared of falling down them than I was sparring.

Palooka, Where is that pub on Balby road, closer to town on right hand side going towards Donny, Denis Hickling the pro darts player used to play darts there.palooka wrote:Hi, Mimmygood afternoon, Merc

Re: Paul Sykes v Lenny McLean
The Tadcaster Arms, Palooka, is that where John rushton had his gym?
Re: Paul Sykes v Lenny McLean
Yeah, on the right hand side of the main road, over from where the pit and public toilets used to be. Dean Bramhald, Kevin Plant, Dave Croft, Dave Jules, Kev Marshall, Karl Domonkos, Mick Murray, Mick Cordon, Neil Malpass and a few other waifs and strays including me used to train down there. I'll never forget one of the heavyweights squatting down to insert a pile suppository up his arsehole, I'd not seen anything like that before! The ring down there was small and in the corner and I think I remember a little sauna. I fancied myself a white Don Curry but in reality was shite!mimmy123 wrote:The Tadcaster Arms, Palooka, is that where John rushton had his gym?
I see Johnny Rushton from time to time and he's looking well, he had a health scare but still dresses well and looks in good trim. He regrets his time in Boxing though and wishes he'd encouraged young men to learn a musical instrument instead - one of his daughters is married to a musician.
Johnny also ran the gym at The Plough in Balby and Mick Preston had The Prince of Wales - he had an arrangement with Frank Maloney - ex pro fighters Carl Tilley and John Oxenham took over the Princes gym but have moved to a bigger gym - they train amateurs not pros.

Thanks for the update - informative as alwaysthank you, Merc - hope you've got a few days off over Easter and all is well with you, your family and your mum. I've got 4 kids in garden, made a base under the trampoline and got a fire going, they've made bacon and beans - black bright all of em. I've got to go back into work later, got a needy and demanding customer.
Palooka, did you know the dart player Denis Hickling who was a pro dart player out of The prince of Wales, do you still sup in their?? A kid I knew drank in there too had a burgler alarm business years back called BEE-WARE
Re: Paul Sykes v Lenny McLean
It's not a pub anymore, Mimmy - it closed about 7 years ago - it struggled for years and now it's been turned into a vets. It was somewhere we'd drop into on the way to town sometimes but was never a local. We used to use The Fairway a lot more and then jump on bus and do a town centre pub crawl - The Nags Head, White Swan, Magdelin, Wool Pack, Gallery, White Bear, Edwards, Kings Head, High Bar - 10 bottles of lager, 5 rum and cokes a gram of base amphetamine and a couple of E's. No wonder my head's fucked and it's no wonder my boxing career was so undistinguished

Pah even the MODS are at it with this PIGG business now:

It has to stop I tell you, STOP

The internet's a wonderful thing.
I was watching Alan Partridge Does Ecstasy on Youtube and the link to the Paul Sykes documentary came up. Fascinating video if you can stomach the close ups of Paul in his incredibly short shorts. This thread provided some fascinating stories about him as well - really enjoyed reading it all, thanks to all concerned

I had read somewhere that when Joe Frazier was sparring with Sykes in getting ready for his fight with Joe Bugner for 2.July1973.
Yank Durham was impressed enough with Sykes boxing ability and wanted him to come to Philadelphia
and train there but shortly after returning to the USA in August Yank Durham had died and it never happened.

Oh.
And that Neil Malpass fella, the one who beat the two bareknuckledraggers Fury and Sykes, so of course that means I can beat Fury and Sykes, and also means that I can beat Fury's son Tyson who is still recognised as the linear and ring magazine heavyweight champion of the world, so that makes me that aswel ! Good day knuckleheads
