I have the film on video and have watched it numerous times. It is not very close. Schmeling does not win more than 4 rounds, and 3 rounds is much more on the mark. The 3rd round was only given to Max b/c of a foul, not b/c he won it. Max basically had an off-night combined with the fact that Baer was EXCELLENT that night-he showed a great chin, great stamina, good work to the body and head. He stayed on Max's ass all night and just walked through his right hand counters. I think Max was a little mentally fazed when Max laughed at him after tasting some hard punches.
Overall, as fighters, Schmeling was a better fighter. But Baer pretty much beat up the German that night. The KO is BRUTAL

Baer was a fighter with enormous talent who was too bored by boxing to make much with it. In terms of potential I rate him above Schmeling, in terms of achievement of course not.dempseyfire wrote:I have the film on video and have watched it numerous times. It is not very close. Pundit - I taped the fight from ESPN Classic 3 or 4 years ago. Sometimes they show some interesting old fights. The last few weeks they have been showing fights that are usually on ESPN2, but that its probably because of the women's basketball tournament and the Mens NIT that have been on ESPN2. Hopefully they will show some old fights again soon. If you can get this channel in your area I would if I was you.pundit wrote:Can you please tell me what tapes you hve and where you bought them.Ambling Alp wrote:There was no announcer on the tape that I have. ESPN Classic doesn't show the whole fight. I have a different version with all 10 rounds.
BB, even if Scmeling won 4 rounds (and I would say he won 3) it still doesn't mean the fight was close. Baer won his rounds CLEARLY and really beat the German up through most of the fight. Schmeling won his rounds by close margins, basically through sharper punching and the fact that Baer took a few rounds off.
I am a Max Schmeling fan but facts are facts. Baer whupped his ass.

im not saying he didnt take a beating because baer battered him defintley, however the fight was close. just cause a guy took far more punishment doesnt mean he didnt win the fight. you go round by round.dempseyfire wrote:ESPN Classic doesn't show the whole fight. Funny - Schmeling writes in his autobiography that the fight was a desaster, he was outclassed throughout the fight, and by the time Baer was asked by his corner to knock out Schmeling - before round 8 - Schmeling claims that he could hardly keep his arms up.
However, according to "Cinderella Man" Baer's corner told him apparently that he was behind and needed the knockout - Baer responded "no problem".
So I can see what people are arguing about here.
