Mikkel Kessler 2018 comeback... How successful can he be?

Post by Ron C »

This year Mikkel Kessler wanted to make a comeback
https://www.google.com/amp/www.dailymai ... ng-38.html

But apparently has been delayed:

http://www.espn.com/boxing/story/_/id/2 ... -tick-bite

He still wants to come back next year. Think he can have any success? He’ll be 39, but I feel like 168 isn’t nearly the division now that it was when Kessler was fighting in the Super Six. Who would his biggest challenges be? I just had a look at his instagram and he appears to be in GREAT shape!! If he does come back next year I’d honestly be excited. If he can perform like he did when he was active I think he can be very competitive

Thoughts?

He can make some money, and maybe crack the Top 15 again. With a win or two, one of the titlists would surely be glad to take him just for his name value.

If it's a title shot he's after his management better be careful about who they select as his initial comeback opponent(s).

It’s hard to say whether he can be a force at the elite level. I don’t imagine he‘d be too far off though. He‘s a puncher and a strong guy

I just can't see him hanging with the guys at the top anymore. I think he could deal with the guys just below that though possibly. A good test to see where he's at would be Kessler vs Porky Medina or someone like that.

Though they might wanna go a little further down the ladder for his first fight back after a lengthy layoff, and taking his age into consideration.

If he is in to play in the kiddie pool he will have some success. The big boys will hurt him severely.

If he isn't too fussy about which 'title' he fights for, I would fancy him to beat Tyrone Zeuge.

I wouldn't fancy his chances against any of the other belt holders, but see no reason why he couldn't get a shot, one mediocre win can get a fighter ranked and thus in position for a voluntary.

Can he really make 168 at his age after more than 4 years of inactivity?

I would think he has 2 crappy fights, then cashes out against one of the champs at 175.

Also winning a title at 175 adds a lot more to his legacy than trying do something at 168.

Much deeper field of competition at 175 though

Didn't he catch Lyme disease? If so, he already has a brutal fight to deal with.

He's got to be broke... He was never a real good boxer to begin with, so his comeback is going nowhere... He's praying, that's it.

Direll, avni, shudinov. They not great or very good by any means, but good.

I don't think he'll comeback, I reckon his body breaks down a couple more times and he gives it up...

He'll have a decent run against mediocre opponents before cashing out in a big arena UK fight against whoever of Groves, Eubank or Smith wins the super middleweight tournament.

I disagree with a few on here. He was a very good fighter with his only loss before the super 6 to The fighting pride of Wales(49-0 retired) JOE CALZAGHE :bag: He has beaten very good fighters and fought well against Joe C. I do think however that the fight against Joe is what ruined Kessler. He was never the same after that like he was missing a step in every fight. Many of the guys that Calzaghe fought were like that afterwards(ex: Jeff Lacy).

Calzaghe didn't retire 49-0... Where do you get that bullshitt???

Kessler was wide open... Only good fighters he fought were Calzaghe, Ward, and Froch -- losing to each... His win over Froch was hometown BS

Sorry 46-0. That was a typo. You should calm your ass down. He fought alot of good fighters and a few great ones.

kess-froch 1 couldve gone either way. not hard at all to justify 7 rounds for kess.
