off topic: how to get a video onto DVD/computer

I suspect someone on this forum might know how to do this; how could I copy the contents of a VHS video tape onto my computer hard drive or onto a DVD? Presumably there's a way of doing this?

dvd recorder for a dvd hard drive. probably hook the vcr onto a capture divice and run it into your pc.

you can plug a scart cable into a DVD recorder and play the VHS as you record. Unfortunately I cant figure out how to then get the DVD to play in anything other than the recorder it was recorded in.

I guess it really depends on your DVD recorder.
With most its just a case of adding the VHS player into the loop, and record it onto DVD..then straight forward copy onto computer, lots of converters to change the format over from DVD files to AVI or Mpeg if you then want to edit it, WinAVI Video Converter is about the best..easy to get a crack to full version.

Or you could go out and buy a cheap DVD recorder for the television and record your video onto there.

It it a laborious process using the method you want.

Sounds like you need to finalize the disc.

The option to finalize should be in the DVD recorder menu.

Best thing to do is get a dvd recorder that has a hard disk on it... then you hook it up to your tv and a video recorder and then record the video onto the disk of your dvd recorder. Once you've done that you can edit it to how you want before burning what you've recorded onto a blank dvd. Finalise the dvd and you should be able to play it on anything pc or dvd player wise. Recorders vary from make to make, I've got a Pioneer 420 which is excellent... easy to use as well and has a 80gb harddisk on it... you can also get the 520 now which has a 160 gb hard disk for about £399....
