I have fond recollections of people who actually assumed some level of intelligence in their audience. People like Dan Maskell, John Arlott, Reg Gutteridge and the like. On the radio, people like Peter Jones doing the football ( who obviously had to be more descriptive )

The did not waste time saying " he's hit the ball ' or whatever when it was frickin' obvious that's what had happened.

Now, I suspect, the commentators are trying to describe what is going on to a younger generation with the attention span of a gnat and who are probably flipping channels between the fights and MTV Base

As for Merchant, he is a different case. he is just a tosser

i can't stand the fuckeng 'keys to victory' caption list that comes onscreen, on showtime, hbo and espn. come on, do they thing we're thick f_ucks or what? does anyone remember ITV's screening of Virgil Hill vs Ramzi Hassan? Gutteridge was commentating and when the caption 'Al's keys to Victory - Hill 1) Use the jab...' comes on he says "Well thank you very much, I think we knew that already"
