Whatever happened to Walter Monahan ?

Post by Caractacus »

Jack Johnson's sparring partner for the Jeffries fight and his own "Great Black Hope"?
(Johnson was grooming him for a Great White Hope himself so he could cash in on it.)

I didn't realize that he was actually a middleweight.
Here are some various photographs of him.

I wonder if there were two Walter Monahan's ?
The one who sparred with Jack Johnson in 1910 was described as
a "Ex-Amateur Heavyweight Coast Champion".

Walter Monaghan went into law enforcement and eventually became the Sheriff of Allegheny County. He died after a three-year illness at his home in Brookline, Pennsylvania on September 19, 1951. At the time of his death, Monaghan had tuberculosis that was complicated by a heart condition. More information about Monaghan can be found on his BoxRec biographical page.

Would that be the HW Walter Monahan who was at least 6 ft tall and Jack Johnson's sparring partner and "protege" in 1910-11.
or the Middleweight Walter Monahan from Pittsburgh who didn't take up boxing until 1911 ?

I apologize for thinking that Walter Monaghan, the Pittsburgh middleweight, was the fellow that you were interested in. In fact, I didn't know that there was a ca, 1910 San Francisco heavyweight named Walter Monahan. I tried to track down information about Monahan, but it was tough sledding. Was Monahan fighting under his real name?

yeah,Jack Johnson does not mention Walter Monahan as a sparring partner at all in either of his autobiographies at all (1911 and 1927)
perhaps he did fight under another name.
I'm so confused.
But then again maybe so was Jess Willard when they sent out a request
to do an exhibition for the Army with a "Walter Monahan" in 1919.
A 6 ft 7 inch tall,250 lb man boxing with a 5 ft 7" tall middleweight?
No wonder he had accidently knocked him out.

There were to different Walter Monahans fighting at the same time. One from the west coast (a hw)and one from Pittsburgh (a mw). The hw one was the sparring partner.

The HW Walter Monahan was also the one who fought George "Kid" Cotten.
Jack Johnson had arranged the fight himself.

The heavyweight Walter Monoghan moved to Palm Beach Florida in later years and opened up a gym down there where he trained and managed fighters and promoted amateur boxing. He died in 1953.
