I’m starting to think you actually never watched tommy fight. Ray survived that fight long enough for tommy to gas. Many others would’ve dropped after the first hook or upper cut. He wasn’t over hyped - your saying that because he was a white heavyweight. He was good, simple as that.

Like I said... Morrison was punching himself out by the 4th round against the far less experienced Mercer and couldn't absorb a damned thing.

And the Morrison-Bentt Fight was interesting, don't you think??? ... How the Hell does a tyro who couldn't get Mark Wills out in his previous fight, smash Morrison out in the 1st round if Tommy knows what he's doing in there??? He wasn't a genuine world class Heavyweight or he wouldn't get bombed out by a guy like Bentt... In his next fight Bentt fought a fair to middling Heavyweight (Herbie Hide) and Bentt was nearly killed...

Bentt didn't belong in that ring, fighting at that level -- but he was a challenger who was okayed by the WBO for Morrison... Unbelievable.

Tommy's chin wasn't the greatest; he could dish it out but not take it.
Foreman was his best win, although there's some rumors about the fight being fixed for him.

Before calling Mercer unexperienced at that point - he was already accomplished amateur with golden olympic medal (and with amateur win over the same Morrison on top of it).

Mercer beat a pretty weak field to get the Olympic Gold Medal. And he only had 17 fights when he was matched with Morrison. He was green.

On seeing Mercer easily knock Morrison out, 42-year-old Larry Holmes called his people... "I want this kid Ray Mercer" ... or words to that effect.

"Yeah the WBO Heavyweight champ.. I can beat him all day.. Do whatever you have to do to make the fight." Holmes told the media words to this effect. "I expect to be the underdog because he's an undefeated Heavyweight Champion. This kid hasn't even seen a finished professional fighter yet. I ain't no Tommy Morrison. The fighters Mercer has faced so far can't even slip a punch well."

I believe Mercer was stripped of the title -- or gave it up voluntarily so he could get a win over an ATG Heavyweight Champion on his resume.

Rumors had it Arum had told Foreman to go easy on Tommy, as he was a big cash cow of his.
Not saying it's true, but not entirely discounting it either, since it's the crazy HW division and the mega dough going with it.

Ho hum, another "the fight was fixed" claim, even though there's never any proof. Kind of like Kennedy assassination conspiracy theories.

Foreman was in a lot of fixed fights, wasn't he. Ali. Moorer. Morrison.

As for the Morrison-Mercer fight, it seems pretty self-evident.

Morrison for about 3 1/2 rounds was the superior, more versatile fighter. He had no problem hitting the very one-dimensional Mercer with anything.

No way in hell was Mercer beating him easily, as one guy here opines.

In the end, Mercer proved himself to be the tougher, more durable fighter. For a number of years, the ex-Marine possessed one of boxing's best chins.

But if Morrison had approached Mercer like he did Foreman--with great respect--he could have easily out boxed the plodding Mercer for a one-sided decision.

A guy who's well into his 40's going easy on a young whippersnapper is NOT going to happen... By that age you've endured so many bombs to the head you're not going to feel for ANYBODY when it comes to winning a Heavyweight Title Fight.

George even loaded up on a south-of-the boarder shot... The explanation to me???... He was an old man and it's tough going at that age.

How does a 1-dimensional plodder who lacks versatility beat Tim Witherspoon, Bert Cooper, Francesco Damiani and fight Lennox Lewis and Evander Holyfield to a standstill??? Believe me Pipino, that doesn't happen.

Morrison was not superior at any time... Nor was Mercer "one-dimensional" or "plodding" ... Those characterize Morrison, who had no versatility whatever.. You have to actually watch the fight and know something about Boxing... Morrison had 1 thing going for him -- he could punch.. He couldn't box worth a damn... He had no jab... threw too hard... couldn't set anything up... couldn't defend himself... couldn't out box Ross Puritty when he had 43 fights and Puritty was only 8-8... couldn't beat half-assed Michael Bentt when Morrison had 39 fights and Bentt was 10-1.

Mercer told Sean O'Grady before the fight that Morrison would punch himself out and be gone before the 8th round -- which made sense... It was the 1st time Morrison fought anyone with good footwork.. movement.. pace.. defensive skills.. a cool headed demeanor.. and who could counterpunch really well... Morrison was gassing out by the 3rd round -- to the extent he was wide open for a right hand to close the 3rd.

By the 4th round Morrison was done.. Mercer easily maneuvered around the ring and out-boxed Tommy as he pleased, battering him with a variety of punches.. A desperate Morrison gasped for air and kept walking straight into Mercer trying to grab and lean on him, walking into punches because his strength was gone.. He was done.. At the end of the 4th round Mercer raised both fists high in the air, proclaiming victory.. He knew the fight was his.. All that was left to do was cleanup.. punching the inept Morrison out a few seconds into the 5th.

Damiani was way ahead when Mercer broke his nose and stopped him. 42 year old Holmes clowned Mercer.
He was a punching bag vs Lewis and Holyfield past the third rd.
I agree with Pipino, Mercer was just a tough guy who based his success on his chin, punch and youth.
But i don't believe Morrisson could have stayed away from him for the duration even if he tried; Tommy just couldn't hold a punch well and never could box.

Somewhere in between these two assessments.

Both were really good boxers.
