Rumoured: Kell Brook vs. Sam Eggington - with Atif Shafiq on the undercard?

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Kell Brook could be fighting Sam Eggington in Sheffield early in March - with a vibrant undercard featuring back-to-form Ingle gym-mate Atif Shafiq.

Rumours have been sweeping the sport that Birmingham-born Eggington - who lost his European Welterweight title in October - could be the opponent in Brook’s comeback fight. Shafiq said: “I have heard that rumour, that would be a really exciting fight. Kell has fought at the highest level in his last two contests but he needs to drop back, get a win, get his confidence going and move back into big fights.”

Shafiq hopes to be on the undercard. He executed a points win over Rhys Saunders in November, which helped his own confidence.

The Rotherham lightweight had struggled with injury and wasn’t happy with recent form until the Saunders win.

“Dom and John (Ingle) both say I am now back to where I was and I felt in control and switched-on in that fight.

“I want to be in exciting fights, and that’s what I will be looking to do in the New Year”
said the 23-year-old.

Eggington was a solid domestic/euro level welterweight who (if matched properly) will likely make it to a similar level at LMW.

Brook could do a lot worse for a comeback opponent, but it would be a somewhat uninspiring choice. Though that would be in keeping with most of Brooks opponents.

Brook by late TKO, who will then climb to a disproportionately high ranking.

Eggington to recover and fight for domestic/european honours within a year.

If it goes that way, certainly. Eggington could come back from a loss to Brook, but not the other way round.

I agree. Egg is still on the right side of his 20's. Can still have a long career.

As much as I think Brooks on the slide I think he would pummel Eggington. Too accurate and sam just wouldn't be good enough to put a dent in him.

Yeah maybe. Who knows what version of Brook we'll see again.

The Hearns (especially Barry) rave about how much they love Eggington.

If they do then they need to avoid this fight.

He’s early 20’s FFS and still learning. Needs to focus on how to beat a mover.

An all domestic clash which he’d probably lose without a major title on the line would be them sending him to slaughter.
They’d probably have the audacity to put it on PPV.
Eggington is a good fighter. Time to put the brakes on now and let him learn at British/Euro level like he’s been doing.

He's already won the EU welterweight title.

They shouldn't use him to help someone else IMO. They should start a new path for him. Win the British/Comm 154 title, possible Euro. He can learn so much in the next few years. By time he's 27/28, he should be in a place to challenge for a world title or at least step up to a good level. He doesn't need more losses right now.

Whilst all that may be true will Eggington get an opportunity for a payday like Brook again? And whilst some may say he'd be a lamb to the slaughter plenty will suggest it's a winnable fight for him.

He's took a lot of damage over the last year. Eggington will be looking to take advantage and break Brook down mentally if this happens.

I agree, Brook is above Eggington though.

Can't figure out if they're feeding Egg to Brook or Brook to Egg.. :maybe:

I did see one of the Eddie spoofs trying to sell this as a PPV, which I think even matchroom wouldnt risk at the moment.

But the fight itself has more than likely been discussed behind the scenes.

Apparently, Brook has 5 fights left..

http://www.skysports.com/boxing/news/12 ... ddie-hearn

Kell Brook “needs boxing in his life” and could have five more fights, according to his promoter Eddie Hearn.

Brook is expected to return in early March as a light-middleweight in his home city of Sheffield after back-to-back defeats to Gennady Golovkin and Errol Spence Jr, in which he broke a different eye socket in each fight.

"I'm looking forward to him getting back to Sheffield where he has had a lot of glory," said Hearn.

"We need to get Kell back in love with the sport. He's coming off two defeats and some criticism, which he didn't take well, so we need to get him winning and enjoying it.

"He could have five fights left in him. It's a tough division. It's not just about world titles, at this stage. It's about being involved in big fights. The Amir Khan fight remains something he, and all of Britain, wants."

I'll be surprised if this is made....with Barry taking Eggington under his wing, I'll be shocked if he's then thrown under the bus against Brook who would dismantle him easily. Eggington needs his confidence building up to regroup at Euro level, and though he's young a damaging loss to Brook would be hard to come back from.

Agreed, he seems easy to hit. When a fighter uses his offence as a defence they quickly come unstuck when they face decent opposition. I could see Brook sticking and moving through to a lopsidesd points win or a late KO.
