2018 International Boxing Hall of Fame Inductees

Post by scorpio83 »

If anyone heard the news, the International Boxing Hall of Fame will induct former heavyweight champion, Vitali Klitschko, 4 weight division champion Erik Morales and former junior middleweight champion Ronald "Winky" Wright along with lightweight contender Sid Terris for the class of 2018. Vitali Klitschko became the first Ukrainian fighter to be inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame and also at 6'7 1/2" or 6'8", the tallest inductee ever previously held by former heavyweight champion Jess Willard, who stood 6'6 1/4". What are your thoughts?

Thanks for posting this. I had not heard anything about it.

I guess we all knew this was going to happen someday. :verysad:

The IBHOF just picked a fighter who has no business being in the HOF. Cue the irrelevant info about WBS titles won and number of WBS title defenses and the crybaby excuses.
Yes there are handful even worse. Doesn't mean he deserves it. Bottom line: He was 0-2 in fights that really mattered.

Morales and Wright were solid picks. Both were great fighters who beat quality competition.
Sid Terris is an interesting choice. He had some excellent wins. Then his career fell apart. Can live with this one.

Doesn't matter though for this thread. We will be spending the next few weeks discussing the mediocre one.

Jess Willard was not 6'6 1/4" ... He was 6"5 1/4" ... Carnera was 6'5 3/4" and was the previous tallest Heavyweight Champion according to Guinness Books of World Records from the 70's that I used to have copies of. I'm not sure about Lennox Lewis, but he's 6'5" if you google it... Riddick Bowe is the same height -- or at least he was in his 20's... If you don't exercise or keep your frame healthy you tend to shrink a bit.

I was just visiting there two weeks ago.....

I was suspecting that these names would be chosen......based on some conversations....they seem worthy in my opinion.

I did have a disagreement with a significant person in that organization....as he honestly thought Canelo beat Golovkin......an opinion that I respectfully and profoundly disagree with.

However....I won't be surprised if Canelo can pull of the win next time.....anyone watching that fight, may have noticed that Canelo appeared to be figuring his opponent out....and had more success as the fight went on.....this could be a problem for Golovkin, unless he has some new tricks up his sleeve in the next likely go round.

I have to admit, I also was under the impression that Carnera was slightly taller than Jess......based on publication info.....though I never personally was present at any of their respective weigh ins.

Canelo actually had more success early than late, and clearly lost the fight.. Golovkin will approach the rematch differently I believe.. He was too intent on knocking Canelo out -- because he strongly suspected he would be robbed of any decision and was correct.. But a 27-year-old with over 50 fights, including many World Title Fights, who has a strong defense and a very strong chin, is almost impossible to KO.

Canelo will be better when they meet again and he's in no hurry because Golovkin is aging... Therefore---it behooves Golovkin to use his better height, range, and footwork to control Canelo with the jab... He has a superior jab and needs to pile up enough points to where it's impossible to rob him unless you have 3 Adelaide Byrd's judging the fight... If I did his game plan for the 1st fight that would have been the strategy.. Make the shorter and less skilled fighter drive into your wheelhouse when he gets way behind on the cards..

Odds are, you're not going to knock him out so don't try... You just make it much easier for him to score points.

Ernie Terrell was also a heavyweight champion ( though not linear ) and stood 6'6" if stats are to be believed.

Well.....I'm pretty sure that's not indicated by the score cards.....I can't see why you'd say that other than to be contrary......you think Golovkin ended stronger? And Canelo had his good rounds up front? So Golovkin almost pulled it off? Were you watching the fight in reverse?

What happened was that Triple-G led all the way but Canelo had a couple of decent rounds through 6. GGG came on and started pounding him pretty good and definitely controlled the ring, landed more clean punches, and carried the fight to Canelo all the way.

I was amazed Golovkin didn't box and use his jab and height more... and thought he was too intent on a stoppage which was unlikely to happen. In this case he could have gotten 2 of the judges.. Don Trella was the real thief.. He gave Canelo the 7th which even Byrd gave to Golovkin.

No doubt in my mind GGG won. I was just thinking I was seeing Canelo begin to show understanding of what he needed to do as the fight went on. But he NEVER did enough to earn a draw.
