Well?

I've seen guys like Tony Galento use this exact headgear in old footage, and I know Everlast used to make them, but not for a few years.

I used to spar with no headgear on unless trainers made me wear one... Jose Torres did the same thing -- no headgear for sparring at all.. The more elaborate the headgear the more you get hit.. The ones with the bar in front of your face make you easier to be hit with jabs and straight power shots.. The ones with extra cushion make your head bigger. Actually they all make your head bigger -- or at least provide your opponent with more target.

In my day we didn't wear headgear for amateur fights. The Amateur International Boxing Association wanted to prove how effective wearing headgear was in cutting down concussions and brain trauma. To their surprise their study showed wearing headgear actually increased your likelihood of getting concussions by 75%... In other words eliminating headgear reduced concussions by 43%... So in the last Olympics male boxers didn't wear headgear... Sure enough they had better results.. That is very surprising to most people.. You would think with the more cushion the less brain trauma -- so it's a head scratcher.

Hated headguards. Always felt easier to slip punches without them. Good for avoiding cuts if you have thin skin.

I agree, I'm just curious if this style still is produced anywhere.

Don't think so, they'd have to be custom made I reckon if you wanted one these days

Always found headguards poxy things tbh

All they do is stop cuts really

Not always... George Foreman and David Haye are among boxers who got cut bad in sparring.

When I used to spar I wore the headgear with the bar because my nose bleeds easy. I couldn't see shite though. :OhYes:

I think they abandoned making these types of head guards years ago, Very rare to see anything like them anymore.

Closest things you see now are the head guards with the nose bar type thing across the front, maybe occasionally the full face protection masks you see for kick boxing or full contact Karate but wouldn't recommend them for boxing.
