Mairis Briedis vs Murat Gassiev

Post by davideboxe »

Both are undefeated cruiserweight champions, both are fighting in the Super series tournament.
If tomorrow they fought, who would win, Briedis or Gassiev?

Let's see how they handle their next opponents first. At this time, I would expect Gassiev to win.

Are they not on opposite sides of the draw?
They need to both make the final to fight.
That is a long shot

If i had to bet money, i would bet on Gassiev, he is taller, slighty better technically and both got similar power punch. Gassiev's chin is better tested. it's hard to believe he is 23 only

Not saying Briedis would win, but Gassiev didn't really impress me against Lebedev. He had far too many off rounds and could have won decisively. I'm not sure if that was what Abel planned, as he was fighting a skilled veteran in Lebedev.I know he's a good fighter, but I need to see a good performance. Wlod is more or less past his best, I expect Gassiev to win, but I want to see how he wins. Whether it's a decision, it needs to be exciting, or if he can stop Wlod inside the distance.

I'll wait til that fight, making a predicion vs. Briedis.

Thought the opposite. Gassiev fought within himself, well paced, and still beat Lebedev decisively. Solid fight and performance.

Yes I know, Briedis has to fight against Perez and the winner will face Usyk.
Gassiev is in going to fight El diablo next month and the winner will face Dorticos.

The first time i saw Briedis was in the Bigger is better HW tournaments... He looked great fighting much bigger fighters... By far the best fighter to emerge out of the formula. I always wished he would pursue his career at CW and he did which is a very good move imo. He has good hands, he is crafty, has good pop but is more importantly the best body puncher at CW. IMO even though Gassiev is very talented, Briedis finds a way to impose his superior pop & experience, his composure and ability to figure fighters out and pulls off the W.

Don't think either of them will go into any of those contests as a massive underdog but the likelyhood of them coming through all 4 match ups would get you decent coin at a bookies

Whether they get there through this tournament or not, it would be one I'd like to see and will probably happen at some stage

Lebedev is underrated though. He's a better boxer than people give him credit for and he's durable as fornicate. He took some absolutely huge shots from Gassiev which would have knocked out a lot of guys. I do agree in that he doesn't fight at a high tempo for sustained periods though which leaves you prone to losing rounds on just activity alone.

Lebedev is a CW southpaw version of Canelo.

Canelo is nowhere near as tough though lol. It would be like Canelo's skills but more like Golovkins chin.

Not sure about Wilder - the guy hasn't been seriously tested, but he beats the other 3.

well he did look beastly last fight and showed an iron chin against lebedev. hes no doubt very strong but my big question is whether he can step up his workrate enough if he has to. against lebedev he was way stronger and hurting him all the time and it looked like he could stop him, but then so many rounds he just seemed to stop throwing and simply walked forward while lebedev kept punching, although not doing any damage. made it way closer than it needed to be. i think gassiev couldve stopped him if gassiev had gone harder. does he have that extra gear i wonder.

Usyk, Gassiev and Dorticos could be a top 10 HW, maybe even top 5 (at least Usyk)
Briedis, considering how he dealt vs Charr, could be top 10 too
