Martin J Ward vs Juli Giner

Post by handsofstone »

Undefeated British and Commonwealth Super Featherweight champion Ward fights Spaniard Giner for vacant European title on Wednesday on the Katie Taylor card on Sky, never seen Giner but he's a former holder of the belt and one of his 2 losses was a KO to Miguel Roman no less, he's been in with a couple of familiar names, not a puncher by all accounts but his fight with Roman was even before he was stopped

I like Ward he's a classy boxer but he can be a slow starter and has off nights, I thought he got an absolute gift against Cacace, I fancy him to win this one but its another banana skin

i like ward though hes been vulnerable. ya i notice a lot of ppl who thought he was gifted vs cacace but personally felt he won barely. i figure he does enough to the more basic giner but seen some of juli and hes not bad. ..strong despite not having a big ko rate.

not a bad card

Meh.

At least Ward is going the traditional route. I've not enjoyed his fights at all. Heard the Cacace one wasn't good but I haven't seen it.

I wont be watching this live. But I'll record and catch up if I hear it is a good fight.

Tough fight for Ward but a great win and the last round was quality, Ward not a noted puncher but both KDs were top drawer, the left hook for the 1st knockdown was as sweet as you'll like and the right hand to finish Giner was quality, half a step back then bang, very good

Giner had his moments though, he looked stronger than Ward, he hurt Ward with a peach of a left after getting hurt himself, Ward was the quicker flashier boxer but the round were close, Giner was always dangerous, fair play to Ward for pulling that out of the bag

I still think ward should have a rematch with Ronnie Clark but won't happen. I just think at no stage did ward even make Ronnie feel what he had and Ronnie dropped him and had him away In the 12th. But obviously ward is gonna want to go to world level .

I thought Ward looked crisp and fast, very tidy boxer, but he was getting caught flush quite a lot coming in and I think he'll have problems with a harder puncher. How far can he go? I think he might come up short at world level, but at 5'8" he seems quite big for a SFW so can probably move up the weights and win a couple of EBU titles...

A few people have said that they felt Ward lost to Cacace?? I have watched this fight a few times it’s not even that close.. Anto didn’t throw enough punches and Ward was picking him off with relative ease.. Ward is a good solid European level fighter... Got a easy fight in Juli Giner anyone believing the Matchroom hype of it being a step up is crazy they bought that belt frenois would of been a more difficult fight.. I think he outboxes Stephen Smith if that happens next and gets a World Title Fight the Japanese boy Ogawa is very beatable so you never know.. Giner showed the way to beat Ward is walking him down trying to punch with him and trying to stay in the pocket.. Ward deserves a lot of credit he survived against Clark that showed his toughness as he was badly hurt.. A quite routine win over big puncher Townend and out boxing Maxi Hughes and Cacace are great results these fights will just of helped him

Caught up on this fight earlier today. First time I've been impressed with Ward great finish as well.

I've been critical of his style previously but he has gone about his development the right way. That is fighting domestic opponents where you will develop. Like Bellew said too many fighters rush to world titles and are out of their depth.

Id like to see Ward fight Stephen Smith first and I do think he can beat that Ogawa who got a lucky decision against Tevin Farmer.
