P4P Top Ten, Dec 2017

Post by HyacinthusTurnipseed »

Most of the big players in a P4P sense have fought at least somewhat recently so it seems like a good time for all who are interested to make a fresh list. I'll sort out my own shortly.

I always think it's more interesting to at least get an idea of roughly why someone is ranked above someone else or what criteria a poster has for ranking fighters generally, but if you just wanna do a straight list that's up to you. Only thing that annoys me are those that claim there's no #1 - is not a title so it makes no sense; whoever is your #2 is your #1.

Crawford, GGG, Loma, Canelo, Kovalev etc etc etc... who ya got?

1. Crawford
2. Lomachenko
(Loma's loss is still recent enough to be the deciding factor in putting him below Crawf for me. Clear #1 & #2 though)
-------------------------------
3. Kovalev
4. Golovkin
5. Canelo
(Kov looked as good as ever last fight so retains credit from the first Ward fight and earlier. GGG has looked like he has lost a step for a while now though I scored him a clear winner over Saul. Despite that I do feel only a few tweaks to his gameplan and Canelo could have come away with the victory. Broadly he fought well but let too many rounds slip away)
-----------------------------
6. M Garcia
7. Spence
8. Thurman
(Keith has the better resume but Kell is the best guy either have fought IMO and I'm pretty sure Spence takes Thurman out if they fight soon)
-----------------------------
9. Estrada
10. Rungvisai
(Based on their still fairly recent fight, Gonzalez and Cuadras are at least comparable in 115 ability given how close their fight was, and again I'm backing Estrada to win well when they fight in the new year. Still Rungvisai was the person who got it done against Gonzalez so he deserves credit for that)

Missing out: Usyk (just), Santa Cruz (just), Inoue (needs another big win) and Jacobs (needs another big win).

How do you put Lomachenko at the top ?
He's 11-1.
Is Lomachenko trying to fast track his way to number 1 ?

Lomachenko gets respect for stopping Walters and Rigondeaux inside the distance.

Is that enough to clear a number 1 P4P position ?
I don't think it is ?

It's close between him and Golovkin for me. Golovkin is more proven and his win over Canelo is better than anything Lomachenko has done. I give #1 to Loma though, he's on the right side of 'prime', unlike Golovkin.
