Canelo's Promoter: Saunders is a Runner Like Lara, We Want GGG!

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Saunders said he was more interested in a fight with Canelo as opposed to a Golovkin clash.

Could Saunders become another option for Canelo?

Not right now, according to Golden Boy Promotions President Eric Gomez.

Gomez was not very happy with the way Saunders vs. Lemieux played out.

He felt Saunders fought in a very similar manner to Erislandy Lara, who lost a razor close decision to Canelo in 2014.

Gomez takes nothing away from Saunders' win, but feels that type of style would create a fight that won't really be fan friendly for a pay-per-view audience.

They want the most exciting fight possible - which is why they want the rematch with Golovkin.

"We already knew he was a good fighter but what surprised us is how much he runs. He does not allow himself to fight, he starts running, it's a very annoying style. Canelo already fought with a similar style with Erislandy Lara and he got through it. So having said that, we're going to keep the focus on the tiebreaker [with Golovkin]," Gomez said to ESPN Deportes.

So they don't want to fight BJS because there's a chance he'll box Canelos head off! Complete duck. I'd still rather see the GGG rematch to be fair. Don't know why it's taking so long to finalise.

Early 2016, allegedly had already negotiated a contract with Golden Boy to pit Saunders against Canelo, which the Brit duly-signed, but the bout fell through due to Oscar De La Hoya reneging on the terms of the deal that had been agreed with Quéénsberry Promotions.

The Mexican hasn’t fought an opponent his own size that effectively uses a combination of hand speed and footwork to implement a matador fighting style since his highly-competitive bout against Erislandy Lara during July 2014 and I doubt that Oscar De La Hoya would be willing to risk losing his company’s cash cow after witnessing Billy Joe’s performance against Canelo’s fellow GBP stablemate, David Lemieux.

Here's the latest update on this situation, with the article being quoted only published a few hours ago:

"Canelo Gives Golden Boy 'Green Light' To Finalize Golovkin Bout"

Eric Gomez, president of Golden Boy Promotions, revealed that Canelo gave his company the green light to finalize the rematch and they are only waiting for a response from Golovkin and his team, with whom they have been talking with constantly for a few weeks.

"We are close, we are advanced, Canelo wants the fight, he gave us the green light to close the fight and there are important details we're working on to reach an agreement, and once that happens we will work on the contracts," Gomez said in an interview with ESPN Deportes.

"The focus is the rematch. That is what Saul wants, what the public wants, we are close, there are details that must be refined, two things that we are working on but we are close."

"We will continue working until we reach an agreement, it is the most important thing for us, what Saul asked us to do, and we are working on those things. We working with the team behind Golovkin, Tom Loeffler is traveling to Germany, he's speaking with Golovkin and we are only waiting for his answer," Gomez said.

Funny. Canelo ran from GGG, but they call Saunders a runner.

If he's a good runner an elite boxer should be able to run after him and chase him down.

As usual, some so-called boxing fans confuse smart movement with running.

It never ends.

Did you call Gomez a so-called boxing fan? Canelo didn't move any smarter than Saunders.

Did someone suggest fighting GGG over Saunders is a duck? WTF... Saunders said himself I think last year that GGG would beat him and Eubank Jr. in the same night. He is all of a sudden 10X better now? He has $ signs in his eyes.

How the hell can you duck a fighter to fight someone more dangerous like GGG? Stupid thread and the OP should be banned for his stupidity.

Styles make fights. BJS is a pure boxer whose movement will give Canelo fits. Canelo knows this.

Yep, Canelo would be fighting bigger, meaner, harder hitting version of Lara who made Canelo look like a clueless puppy.

This smart decision to not fight Billy Joe is what gets boxing a bad reputation nowadays. It's been this way for a while, fans who are on the outside looking in don't believe we ever see good fights anymore, some of them of course think that a real champ would go out of his way to beat all the top contenders.

It's false to think we didn't have these scenarios before, they're just more high profile because of technology and now there's at least 4 belts per division.

Money always has and always will rule the sport, it's very rare you'll see a fighter decide against his mangers' judgement, because money & your health is all you ever need to come away from the sport.

Canelo never ran against GGG. At 1 point he sat on the ropes an let GGG throw bombs at him, but GGG hardly let his hands go. Other times of the fight he stood toe to toe, sometimes he was the agressor and sometimes he was on the back foot but no point did he run.

Saunders at the end of his fight was running, but who can blame him, its all he had to do to win. The first 8 rounds he didnt run, he boxed on the back foot.

I dont understand supposed boxing fans saying boxers run if they dont stand toe to toe for 12 rounds. Thats not what boxing is about. Seems to be more Americans than Uk fans from what I see on here.

Just because a boxer offers someone a fight or ready to sign the deal, but the other boxer fights someone else who may be a harder fight or where they might get a better purse.

I was arguing to that logic, we can say Bradley ducked Khan to fight Pacman.. but then someone will argue how Bradley fought a harder fight and a bigger purse. Lot of fans apply 1 logic for 1 thing and something else for another.

Using a lot of lateral movement and utilizing the whole ring while LOSING every round is running.

1. Saunders didn't run, he boxed Lemieux's ears off.
2. Saunders is a bad style match up for Canelo.
3. Canelo probably beats Saunders anyway, but there's a chance that his stock would be damaged if he was made to look bad.
