Nathan Cleverly made $100k vs. Badou Jack
Jack got $750k as the challenger.
I actually thought Cleverly was going to be getting a decent payday, and that was the reason he wanted to take the Jack fight on the May-Mac undercard.
Yes, he likely would have made less fighting Bivol. But he was the world "regular" champion going into the fight. I find that quite disrespectful. Also, being the final fight of his career.
When I first read that he wanted to take the bout, with all the negotiations and with Hearn saying that he wants that last big money fight. Who would have thought that was only $100k.
I don't know if Clev received any ppv bonus, and if so, I don't know how much more he would have gotten. I assume Jack would have earned more if it came to ppv sales.
I know it's been 6 months, but I never knew the figure until today.

If my memory is correct, that $100k was his nominal purse out in vegas, and Nathan got additional money from Sky PPV in what was presumably a different financial agreement. I recall reading that at the time.

I'm guessing even most of the Sky PPV went to May and Mac.. even so. A base purse of $100k is still really bad.JimJim2009 wrote: ↑31 Dec 2017, 09:25 If my memory is correct, that $100k was his nominal purse out in vegas, and Nathan got additional money from Sky PPV in what was presumably a different financial agreement. Yep I doubt Floyd and Conor even knew who Nathan was. Cleverly/Jack was on/off for several weeks and got confirmed at pretty short notice, with Eddie commenting at the time that the financial negotiations were difficult. I do hope Nathan got a decent lump sum to bow out with.
Re: Nathan Cleverly made $100k vs. Badou Jack
I'm not sure about this. As champ he only got a fraction of what the challenger got? I don't see Hearn going for that.

I believe it’s fairly common at the higher level for a U.K. boxer to get paid a reduced amount from the US side of the promotion and make up money over here. Something to do with the avoidance of tax.

Can you provide your source for this info, please?

There aren’t going to be any sources unless the promoters openly discuss contractual matters with the media.
From memory tho I do remember in an IFL tv interview one promoter suggested that Hearn didn’t give a fighter all of the TV money when they challenged abroad, I think it was Lee Purdy. In response Eddie said Purdy got every penny of the tv money to add to his purse for the fight. It seems common sense to me that Cleverly got extra money from tv, probably a fixed amount rather than percentage of the ppv.
Re: Nathan Cleverly made $100k vs. Badou Jack
Cheers. I just wondered where the original info came from. Clev ain't stupid so unless he took 15% of the purse to fulfill a lifelong dream of fighting in Vegas I doubt the validity of the 100 grand only purse.jameswilson wrote: ↑31 Dec 2017, 10:26There aren’t going to be any sources unless the promoters openly discuss contractual matters with the media.

Here you go. ESPN. Cleverly purse 100k PLUS UK money.Taansend wrote: ↑31 Dec 2017, 10:30Cheers. I just wondered where the original info came from. Alot, if not all US based commisions release purse details. My original argument was his base purse being slow. Doesn't look good.Taansend wrote: ↑31 Dec 2017, 10:30Cheers. I tweeted Hearn about this at the time and he said he got more money from uk tv money and US PPV too the US purses are rarely the full amount they get due to tax reasons and stuff I read somewhere afterwards in something local in the Welsh news he got close to $600k by the end of it

Decent. But still less than Jack's guaranteed purse.craigjenkins05 wrote: ↑31 Dec 2017, 14:46 I tweeted Hearn about this at the time and he said he got more money from uk tv money and US PPV too the US purses are rarely the full amount they get due to tax reasons and stuff I read somewhere afterwards in something local in the Welsh news he got close to $600k by the end of it

That seems to be a bit of a going rate for Brits abroad. I'm not saying this is actually what these guys earned as the media often get this wrong but some newspapers rumoured that this is what Selby earned for his defence vs Montiel and several sources have Carl Froch's purse as $600k vs Jermaine Taylor.craigjenkins05 wrote: ↑31 Dec 2017, 14:46 I tweeted Hearn about this at the time and he said he got more money from uk tv money and US PPV too the US purses are rarely the full amount they get due to tax reasons and stuff I read somewhere afterwards in something local in the Welsh news he got close to $600k by the end of it

Re: Nathan Cleverly made $100k vs. Badou Jack
I do not recall where I heard it, was an interview with Hearn at some point a year or so back when he explained that they purses stated in the US are not what they receive but is what is filled on paperwork, its the basic purse but does not include all manner of extras. I am not sure what the reasoning was but could have been tax related. Must be a state tax of some sort that can be trimmed down so they can pocket the max amount to then be properly taxed as income back home.craigjenkins05 wrote: ↑31 Dec 2017, 14:46 I tweeted Hearn about this at the time and he said he got more money from uk tv money and US PPV too the US purses are rarely the full amount they get due to tax reasons and stuff I read somewhere afterwards in something local in the Welsh news he got close to $600k by the end of it

I think the tax issue is exactly what it is. I remember reading an article about the minimum possible is but on the commission record to minimise the taxes that foreign based fighters have to pay the IRS.tobyh5 wrote: ↑01 Jan 2018, 04:48I do not recall where I heard it, was an interview with Hearn at some point a year or so back when he explained that they purses stated in the US are not what they receive but is what is filled on paperwork, its the basic purse but does not include all manner of extras. Fighting in the US on a mayweather show against a mayweather fighter for a secondary version of the WBA title I think he done quite wellRuthless-RKO wrote: ↑31 Dec 2017, 16:24Decent. Always wondered. If a British boxer earns $500'000 for a fight at say MSG. Does he get taxed by the US then back in the UK ? So he loses 30-40% straight away to the other country then 30-40% again when he gets home ?Shirow wrote: ↑01 Jan 2018, 08:25I think the tax issue is exactly what it is. You have gym fees and promoters taking cuts of what I presume is left as well. Can a boxer write these of against the tax ?

I’m no tax expert, but I’m pretty sure there’s agreements in place between the UK & US to prevent double taxation in those cases.Orionx wrote: ↑02 Jan 2018, 19:29Always wondered.
