Active boxers with jobs
Active boxers with jobs
Following on from the other thread I thought it would be interesting to discuss this.
I seen on Twitter the other day that allegedly signed WBO European champion Lerrone Richards works as a stock controller at Tesco.
Amy others?

I think Adil Anwar works for Lloyds Bank as a complaints handler.
I believe Denton Vassell is still working for HSBC but not sure.
Jason Cunningham works with disadvantaged children (ones that have been expelled from school etc).

Re: Active boxers with jobs
He's no longer active but Ricardo Williams Jr used to work as a distributor of cocaine in addition to his boxing career.
Re: Active boxers with jobs
I don't know these days but you'd think the overwhelming majority of pro boxers would need a job or income support in addition to boxing.
Maybe if they're single with no kids to support they could get by for a few years but realistically how many are banking what a job would pay? A dozen or so in the country?

There's boxers fighting for titles for a few grand after deductions. There's been British title fights in the past 12 months where the champion's purse has been less than 12k.
Most so-called full-time pros are only full-time because they have sponsors who effectively pay them a wage. Even then, they are few and far between. Of the 800 or so licensed pros in Britain, it's a safe bet that over 700 of them boost their income with other work.
Re: Active boxers with jobs
Only two sorts of boxers make a full time living from the sport active journeymen or ppv fighters
Re: Active boxers with jobs
Outside of football not many sportsmen and women make a living from sport.

I Believe it is 100%...
I know people that started out trying to make it as a champion and ended up going down the journeymen route as it paid much better, don’t have to do tickets give the house money etc
Re: Active boxers with jobs
Ppv fighters in the UK currently like Joshua, Brook, Furys , Groves and Eubank jnr aren't the only full timers.Londonirish wrote: ↑31 Dec 2017, 14:06

No one said they are only the full time boxers.
Most if not all journeymen work as well as box. PPV and journeymen are the ONLY ones that will make money out of Boxin.......
We are talking about making a Living from boxing.

Not necessarily. Could be earning so little that they are on benefits too, could be from a rich family background, still living with ma and pa, could be a student or one of several alternatives reasons to be boxing full time (no other working life) without it being how they make a living.samwbr wrote: ↑31 Dec 2017, 14:49If you are full time you are making a living surely?Londonirish wrote: ↑31 Dec 2017, 14:35

Splitting hairs a bit
Re: Active boxers with jobs
Chris Algeri was a full time student around the time he fought Pac.
Joe Smith Jr kept his job right up to the Hopkins fight.
Jessica McCaskill works full time including the Taylor fight.
Bernard Hopkins was full time with Golden Egg while fighting.
And if course Manny has a full time job..
Boxers make reasonable money sparring while not in the ring, some Ams supplement their unpaid fighting by sparring.

It does seem that all the journeymen I know also work, however I think it is safe to say that the more active make more from boxing than their other job.
