Battling Siki vs. Georges Carpentier

Post by RandomPoster »

Georges Carpentier claims that he paid Battling Siki to take a dive and didn't bother training. Then, Siki got mad because he felt Carpentier was hitting him too hard for what was supposed to be a worked match. It became a real match with both of them repeatedly fouling each other non-stop. Carpentier claims he was tiring because of a lack of conditioning since he didn't bother training for what was supposed to be a worked match. In the video in the following link, at 9:23, you can clearly see Siki kick him hard in the leg and his leg twist. Carpentier claims he twisted his knee when he tripped to the mat. The referee initially disqualified Siki, except the crowd went nuts and they backed down and overruled it.

The French boxing commission decided that neither of them deserved to be champion. Siki, however, still retained the world Light-Heavyweight boxing championship.

Is there still controversy regarding this match? Was Carpentier screwed over by Tiki and the ref? Should the two have re-matched for the title or should they both have been suspended? The excuse that you didn't train because you paid your opponent to take a dive instead doesn't sound like an argument I would want to bring to the commission.

They should have ruled it a "no contest" as there would appear to have been some funny buisness going on with it.
