Saunders: Khan Was Beating Canelo; I'm Better Fighter Than Khan

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Among the factors that make Billy Joe Saunders confident he can beat Canelo Alvarez is the way Amir Khan boxed against Alvarez before Khan got knocked out.

England’s Khan boxed well in a competitive bout before Alvarez knocked him unconscious with a right hand in the sixth round. Khan was ahead on one scorecard (48-47) and down on two (49-46, 48-47) through five rounds, before Alvarez landed the pulverizing punch that ended their May 2016 fight at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

The skillful southpaw also believes he is a better technician than Khan. Saunders (26-0, 12 KOs), the WBO middleweight champion, knows Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KOs) is more likely to embrace a rematch against Gennady Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KOs) for his May 5 return, but he hopes he gets a chance to prove himself against the Mexican superstar.

“I personally think that Amir Khan was beating Canelo on points until … until he got knocked out,” Saunders said during the most recent episode of CompuBox’s “Inside Boxing Live” podcast.

“I believe Amir Khan was one round, maybe two up before the knockout. Now I consider myself a lot better fighter than Amir Khan. I consider myself a lot more crafty, a lot more technical than Amir Khan.

“He’s a great fighter, Amir Khan, he’s a good fighter. But my opinion, again, I class myself as a better fighter. Probably he classes himself as a better fighter than me. But in my own mind, in my own head, I’m a better fighter than him, and I would’ve done a few things different than Amir Khan did. But I would love that fight with Canelo Alvarez, absolutely love it.”

Love it all he wants I doubt very much he will get it , I've said for a while A fit Billy Joe , beats Canelo , to much mobvement ,, Mayweather made Canelo look absolutly stupid and flat footed , Billy is no Mayweather but he's still clever enough and good enough on his feet

I didn’t give him much of a chance till I saw the Lemieux fight, but I’m a believer now. I think he is capable of beating Canelo, though Canelo is much better than Lemieux and it’ll be a much tougher fight, i think it could go either way.

Canelo has the small matter of a GGG rematch in May. Barring either guy suffering a one sided beat down It has trilogy written all over it

I doubt it. The Lemieux win was great but let's have it right - Golovkin gave the same bloke an absolute hiding whilst Billy was flapping around in a leisure centre looking shite.

I rate Saunders but for me he's in a bad position now weirdly enough. Commands respect by virtue of the latest win, brings very little to the table, has no fans. He's the definition of high risk low reward. You're not telling me that the big names are that bothered with the WBO belt and as said, I agree that Canelo GGG has trilogy all over it.

God knows what he does in the meantime if that pans out. He can't draw flies on his own but Khan would sell in fairness.

He'd beat Canelo outside of America.

In America, he'd need to win every round to get the decision. If it's anything remotely close ; robbery.

The problem is that Saunders looked class last time out & both Canelo & GGG aren't going to be in a rush to face him.

I do hope that Saunders doesn't do a Khan & sit out long periods of his career waiting for mega money fights that never happen.

I dont understand this way of thinking.

As a football analogy its like saying Team A was winning until Team B scored 10 goals.

Its not like Canelo hit him with a lucky shot, it was always going to be the case that Canelo was going to beat Khan. Same with Brook an GGG, no way GGG wasnt going to beat him, not bothered how good Khan or Brook look in the early rounds, theyre smaller an quicker, but neither of these reflect how a Caelo vs Saunders or GGG vs Saunders will go

It's kind of like Celtic vs. Barcelona..

Image

Khan is Barcelona and Canelo is Celtic..

Khan appears to do more work, but Canelo hits the target just once and BANG it's over!
