He looked the part in LA in 1984, beating John Lyon (on a majority) on the way to the gold but he didn't have to box in the final because the other finalist, an Italian, bust his thumb and didn't pass the doctor. Gonzales also won the Val Barker as the best boxer in the Games, topping the likes of Pernell Whitaker and Meldrick Taylor for that award. As a pro, injuries messed up Paul's career.
Some good info there - but I don't get why so many people here (mostly on Off Topic) feel the need to shoe-in some political comment about Trump and/or Brexit, it's boring.

While I agree with you, mate, I think in this case he was referring to trump calling Mexicans "rapists" so they may have tainted some peoples point of view.

But I do get your point.

And this will be the last time I mention trump on this page :D

It might have been the current scene or off topic that someone wrote that this is the reason that they need to build the wall. All in caps by the way.
This is despite Gonzales having been born in LA of course...

This is the standard level of political debate these days. We need to get used to it.

Interviewed Paul for the Boxing News annual last year.

A very happy and content person who recalled every aspect of that Olympics with stunning accuracy. That team have regular reunions.

The only guy not to medal, Robert Shannon, speaks to Paul regularly. I interviewed Robert couple weeks back and enquired how Paul was. Everything seemed fine.

This news is shocking, and if found guilty, the damage to Gonzalez' legacy will be catastrophic. Them games made him a hero in LA, he's still popular three today but these accusations, whether true or false, will cut deeply.

A thought with the victims if Gonzalez is found guilty.

I support no head of state, political party or president. They’re wrong uns. But that whole Trump thing about Mexican criminals is not about all Mexicans being criminals, it’s about the police force and officials deliberately sending criminals over the border to get rid of them.

Shannon got clattered by the monstrous Sung-Kil Moon who had previously battered John Hyland in the Games. Moon was eventually eliminated on cuts but came back to win the worlds in 1986 in Reno. As for Gonzales, he got a break in the Olympics when another Korean really rocked him but as the Korean was following up his headguard came off and the action was halted. Gonzales came back brilliantly to win on points.

Shannon is doing okay Bennie. Regrets his approach to that fight so much. Tried fighting with Moon.

He's a barber in Seattle now. He done his barbering qualifications when he was on the U.S. Team, and cut the American team's hair in 84. Charged 3 dollars for a buzz cut and 5 for a style.

He told Holyfield that he was going bald and Evander was furious at the comment.

That's good to hear, Chris. Shannon actually qualified for two Olympics because he made the 1980 team that didn't go (and included Don Curry, Bernard Taylor and James Shuler) before qualifying again four years later. He then turned pro and had a decent career but I think he left it a bit late.

I always liked John Hyland as a brilliant amateur and this comment comes as a surprise; he did nut Janos Varadi in a junior international once but he is from Liverpool.
