Will Terence Crawford leave Top Rank during 2018?

Post by Enlightened-One »

Top Rank took over the promotional rights of Terence Crawford from TKO Boxing Promotions on the 16th June, 2011.

Terence Crawford then agreed to extend his contract with Bob Arum’s company when he signed a three-year extension on the September 16th 2014, which means it’s due to expire in nine months’ time.

I can’t verify this, since the tweets have been subsequently deleted from his account, but I believe that Crawford was upset about how HBO were not marketing his name as heavily as Lomachenko's, with blame partially falling on Top Rank’s shoulders. A complaint that Bud articulated several times.

Apparently Bob Arum is trying to orchestrate a bout between Terence Crawford and Jeff Horn for the 21st April at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, which will be Bud’s first bout at 147lbs after enduring an eight month period of inactivity, with the American currently being 30lbs overweight.

It seems that the vast majority of the top-ten world-rated, big name and governing body ranked 147lb-ers are aligned with Al Haymon, such as:

• Keith Thurman
• Errol Spence Jr.
• Shawn Porter
• Danny Garcia
• Lamont Peterson
• Jessie Vargas
• Andre Berto
• Luis Collazo
• Devon Alexander
• Adrien Broner
• Amir Khan
• Omar Figueroa Jr.
• Victor Ortiz
• Jamal James
• Fabian Maidana

Bob Arum has stated on several occasions that Haymon’s boxers are overpaid, with the likes of Thurman and Garcia commanding double the purses that Crawford is currently earning, which is one of the reasons why we don’t get to see many of the PBC’s fighters facing those being promoted by Top Rank.

There’s hardly any evidence of fights being staged between Haymon and Top Rank affiliated fighters, which means that Terence Crawford may never get to fulfil his ambition of facing all of the top dogs in the welterweight division.

Therefore, will Terence Crawford consider leaving Top Rank during 2018 if they cannot promise to deliver him the biggest fights at 147lbs?

You put Omar Figueroa Jr. twice.

Also, Arum and Showtime's Epsinoza have said on different occasions that they are willing to work together to make such fights. It is the purses that I think will cause an issue.

Arum will tell Crawford he'll get him Pacquiao after Horn if he re-signs.

Gosh I hadn't realised how many 147's they had !
It's not good when a company has that sort of coverage in one division. Grab the belts, and make sure they stay in house.

On one hand I think Terence Crawford needs a couple of warm up type of bouts at 147.
On the other if his name is being touted as top boy at 147 in the short term then he'll have to take a bout against a major opponent.
I go back and forth when it comes to Crawford I'm really not sure, one of the things that has stuck in my mind was him getting clipped against Gamboa who was moving up in weight.
Yes Terence has won a lot of fights since then and looked good I can't deny that but there's that unknown factor of what may happen when he takes on a fully fledged natural Welterweight.

hes very limited by pbc having so many guys. someone like pererson woukdve been a perfect step into 147.

he did dominate diaz, who beat granados and vasquez and was very competetive with peterson, so thats a good sign.

Real question is if PBC fighters will even fight in 2018.

I bet you can’t or won’t, because you know you’re simply perpetuating a myth that you’ve not fact-checked and do not necessarily know to be true!

They don't go after him for the same reason Floyd never publically goes after James Prince. They don't want anything to happen to them. Haymon was a big guy in the music business which is nothing but mafia crooks.

Other major companies are actual promoters with real promotional contracts that GUARANTEE a fighter a minimum pre AGREED upon number of fights per year. If a promoter doesn't keep up their end of the bargain the fighter is free to move on. If Haymon doesn't there's really nothing the fighter can do.

Highly doubt that Terence Crawford will leave Bob Arum and Top Rank. For sure one of the most desirable promoters to work with in American boxing, the deal with ESPN will only give Crawford mass viewing from the wider public, and only invest more eyes on to his career further down the line. With the Jeff Horn fight being signed for April in Vegas, surely Top Rank and Arum plan to match up the winner (highly likely it will be Crawford) with Pacquiao in a winter super-fight.
