Npal was mentioning that the other day how fights in person can have a different look than on camera.BoxBuzz wrote:if only you had been one of the judges......
do you think the camera can be as telling as front row witnessing? It does have limitations you know. I can think of a few fights where it looked different from my seat than it did on camera.

silkov,

charles and johnson both looked spectacular and there was a lot of action. johnson scored most of his points with his awesome jab, while charles landed the harder punches and outsmarted johnson with counterpunches. johnson was more aggresive, outjabbed charles, and landed some big flurries but charles blocked a lot of johnsons punches and countered with some big rights and lefts. charles also knocked johnson down in the 10th with a right hand, but the ref HORRIBLY incorrectley ruled it a slip. it was a clear knockdown.

Johnson was an all time great, win or lose with that fight with Charles. He fought many close fights with Archie until the Mongoose finally found a way to turn his lights out in the 14th round of their last fight. I think they fought like 5 times or so. Archie always managed to get the decisions until the last time around.
Unless my memory is playing tricks on me. That's how I remember it though I didnt see any of these fights I pride myself on knowing their history fairly well.

Thanks, I'd like to see that fight, Johnson had one of the best jabs ever... he also did far better against Heavies than many other Lightheavies generally... very underrated fighter...BrocktonBlockbuster49 wrote:silkov,

i agree,
i watched johnson vs moore 1954 and johnson vs charles 1954
and DAMMM, johnson has one of the best jabs in light-H history. I didnt realize how good it was. it was fast, had a lot of snap, very fluid and crisp, and accurate. he busted up both moore and charles and many other fighters with it. he shutout nino valdes and outjabbed him the whole way, even though nino had a very good jab and 80" reach.
i wish a johnson vs marciano fight 53-55 could have happened.
Johnson vs Marciano would have been very interesting, probably a harder fight for Marciano than Moore was. It's a shame Johnson didn't get another crack at Moore for the title.BrocktonBlockbuster49 wrote:silkov wrote:Thanks, I'd like to see that fight, Johnson had one of the best jabs ever... he also did far better against Heavies than many other Lightheavies generally... very underrated fighter...BrocktonBlockbuster49 wrote:silkov,

Johnson had one of the best physiques of any boxer I've seen too.. last I heard of he was still in good physical shape though he's about 75...

yea i agree, johnson would be a stylistic problem for marciano, though i dont know if harold had the chin for marciano plus marcianos pressure and strength might be too much for harold. however, harold was one helluva fighter top 10 light-H of all time in my book. he was also a nightmare for the best heavyweight contenders in the 1950s.
though seeing the way marciano easily dished out archie who knocked out harold, its hard to believe harold will survive. but styles make fights and harold johnson by no means would be a picknick.
go watch the moore-johnson 1954 title fight, two masters at work. this is an awesome fight.
would have loved to see patterson johnson in say 1956 that would be a very close fight
I think Johnson had a good chin, being koed by Moore is no disgrace... I have their world title bout (well 20 mins of it) and Johnson was outboxing Moore till he got caught. I think he'd have stayed away from Marciano more than Archie did and box him... I can see him getting ahead on points, the question is whether he could last the last 5 rounds... I actually think Johnson would have it easier against Marciano than against Patterson... Pattersons speed would be a problem for Johnson...BrocktonBlockbuster49 wrote:silkov wrote:Johnson vs Marciano would have been very interesting, probably a harder fight for Marciano than Moore was. i agree, johnsons style woulda give rocky huge fits. hes just got to be careful he doesnt get caught ala oakland billy smith.
its hard to imagine harold or any 175lb fighter lasting the 15 rounds with rocky. rockys strength, power, pressure, hitting you everywhere causes nightmares for every fighter.
very good boxer lastarza thought he could last the 15 rounds, and he ended up with broken arms and blood vessels in his arms. thats just freakish power right there and you know it.
rocky's accumaltive punching had a devastating effect on fighters, and that was always that right hand lurking around waiting to end the fight with one punch.
rockys strength was inhumane. moore, charles, lastarza, louis couldnt deal with it.
in this matchup you have to go with the rock by late stoppage, but it would be a very good fight and johnsons jab, speed, boxing skills would give marciano a huge stylistic problem. seeing the way marciano battered fast master boxers similiar to johnson, i gotta go with the rock.
rocky is a tough guy to outpoint as well. rocky won about 9 out of 15 rounds against a master boxer like charles, who was still a great fighter when they fought despite being past his prime.
rocky was great at cutting off the ring, johnson cant stay away forever.
but yea, too bad it didnt happen from 53-55 woulda been a great fight!
