One key difference between your and my....

Otherwise, Demspey as #1 in both the 1910s and 1920s is totally insane - he would have been licked bvy both prime Langford and prime Wills, and was outclassed by Tunney.
Most other differences can be argued.

-dempsey was far past it vs tunney and he still knocked him out unofficially. a prime dempsey would catch tunney like he did in the 2nd fight EXCEPT he would not let him off the hook
-dempsey knocks out a prime langford. to beat dempsey langford would have to beat him at his own game which isnt going to happen.
- dempsey would have knocked out wills as well. dempsey combination of speed and power is too much for wills. dempseys masterful inside fighting will reak havoc for wills.

BB,
Good effort. I do have a few of questions that would make things clearer:
1. You have a decade listed as 1930-1940 for example, then 1940-1950. Do you mean 1930's, and the 1940's? Otherwise you are counting everything that happened in the year 1940 twice. Same thing for 1910-1920, then 1920-1930 etc.
2. What exactly do mean by "heavyweight peak"?
3. As Pundit was sort of asking about, are you considering what a fighter did for the entire 10 years of the decade? Or is this more like who had the best year of year in the decade? Dempsey in 1919 was the best of anyone in the decade, but Dempsey wasn't the best fighter of the entire decade of 1910-1919.
I just want to know the criteria that you are using. Of course you will get some criticism no matter what!

1910,1911, 1912,1913,1914, 1915,1916,1917,1918,1919
then
1920, 1921,1922,1923,1924,1925,1926,1927,1928,1929
thats 10 years
thats how i do it
- Rating the best heavyweights per decade by accomplishments is just too off the wall and too many circumstances. just too hard to do. i have used some accomplishments, but mainly i rate them head to head using 10 year period. however i do put a small percentage on accomplishments.
heavyweight "peak" means there best year, like a ali's peak was the terrell fight in 1967

He didn't knock Tunney out "inofficially", this is garbage. Tunney took the time he was given to get up; he could have gotten up earlier if needed - as Dempsey himself admitted.BrocktonBlockbuster49 wrote: -dempsey was far past it vs tunney and he still knocked him out unofficially. a prime dempsey would catch tunney like he did in the 2nd fight EXCEPT he would not let him off the hook
And apart from the "long count" both Tunney-Dempsey fights were a display of total dominance. There was nothing in Demspey's game - and there has never been - that prime Tunney didn't know an answer to (btw, the age difference between both was only 2 years).
You wonder then why Dempsey himself admitted that he wasn't ready in the 1910s to fight Langford; and why he avoided Wills like the plague in the early 1920s - when you say he peaked. The answer is: Dempsey would have been creamed by either fighter, and he knew that only too well.-dempsey knocks out a prime langford. to beat dempsey langford would have to beat him at his own game which isnt going to happen.

Langford beat Dempsey on footspeed, versatilty, defense, and ring generalship; he was his equal in terms of handspeed, and almost his equal in terms of power. Wills was stronger than Dempsey and - in contrast to teh Manassa mauler - knew something about defense.
Don't get me wrong: Demsey belongs into every list of great heavyweights. I'm no Dempsey-basher, far from it. But he was not the #1 heavyweight of the 1920s, and even less so of the 1910s.

he signed to fight harry wills twice, how is that avoiding?

really? so how will tunney be able to deal with a younger, MUCH MUCH FASTER, more powerful, more aggresive, much better reflexes, more stamina, more elusive dempsey?
(btw, the age difference between both was only 2 years).
its not about age. dempseys best years were pre 1920, he fought tunney in 1927. do the math.
You wonder then why Dempsey himself admitted that he wasn't ready in the 1910s to fight Langford;
he turned down langford in 1916. this was well before dempseys prime.
he was a starving green fighter in 1916.
go watch the film, dempsey would defintley beat langford. langford was great defintley and would give jack lots of problems but i cant see langford dealing with the speed and firepower of jack dempsey.Dempsey would have been creamed by either fighter, and he knew that only too well.
i believe langford said he would have never beat jack

He signed Wills in 1924 when Wills was visibly slowing. Still, Dempsey could rely on Tex Rickards that the fight wouldn't happen (btw, thanks for the pic).BrocktonBlockbuster49 wrote:he signed to fight harry wills twice, how is that avoiding?and why he avoided Wills like the plague in the early 1920s - when you say he peaked.
On Dempsey/Tunney, Dempsey/Wills and Dempsey/Langford there is no way how I could get round to your view. As late as 1918 Dempsey - right before his peak - struggled with Wily Meehan, a fighter a very green Wills had disposed of with ease.
P
I think Langford would have destroyed Dempsey... he had a better chin and was faster and had the better punch... he'd have beaten Dempsey at his own game imo.
Good ratings though, but I'd have Ali number one in the 70s too... while he was past his physical best he still managed to win... he beat Foreman, and Frazier 2 out of 3... and I think he probably would have had too much for Holmes up to about '77 so all in all he was the dominating heavy of that decade...

The effort on its own merit is good and appreciated. I have some differences but they are nominal. I lean toward agreeing with Silkov, I could see Larry and Ali battling it out for the top spot in the 70s but Ali dominated the other two that you have ahead of him. Still I think I sense what your up to.

itzsimmons at #3 from 1900 to 1910 is hideous. I also wouldn't rank Corbett that high.
ur right, MY MISTAKE. i meant to switch it up earlier before i posted this but i forgot to edit. its edited now. check it up top.
jack sharkey is underated. ray arcel called sharkey "the greatest ring technician in heavyweight history". i rate jack in my top 25 heavyweights of all time. i think sharkey would have beat baer had they fought.
i can't put moore over patterson. patterson proved he was an all time great heavy. moore proved he was just a very good heavyweight. when he stepped up to that elite heavyweight level, he lost. moore had an off night vs patterson even though moore WON THE FIRST 4 ROUNDS, but i think pattersons speed and power would be too much for an A game archie.
archie always claims had he entered that patterson match more prepared, he woulda won. he was dealing with mental problems entering that bout as he was in the middle of suffering from a horribly blackmail and it really affected him mentally. moore said "i walked into the ring vs patterson, and i didnt feel like myself."
-patterson proved in the 1960s just how great he was.

billy conn was better than jimmy bivins.........
- bivins went 1-1 with bob pastor in 2 dead even fights. billy conn EASILY knocked out bob pastor in 13 rounds
- bivins went 1-1-1 with melio bettina. billy conn went 2-0 vs bettina
- conn stopped buddy knox in 8 one sided rounds. bivins was only able to outpoint buddy knox.
- conn nearly beat a prime joe louis
i also think elmer ray is better than jimmy bivins
- ray was able to beat walcott and charles in 46-47. bivins lost to walcott and charles in 46-47.

Great list BB, and I'm sure this was a lot of work. While there are things I disagree with in the list, most would be pretty minor disagreements. But Ali at #4 for the 70'? He beat all but 2 of the guys on the list, including humiliating Foreman when Ali was clearly was past his prime. Are you sure you didn't type the 70's in wrong?

in head to head wise ali was not the best heavyweight of the 70s.
- ali never beat a prime frazier. in fact when he fought a prime frazier in the 1970s, ali lost clearly.
- ali may have beat foreman, but foreman demolished frazier and norton while i thought ali lost his trilogy with norton and ali lost to a prime frazier. i also think foreman woulda have won the rematch.
in terms of accomplishments, ali rates # 1 of the 1970s. but not head to head. both 1979 larry holmes and 1971 joe frazier would beat any version of a 1970s muhammad ali.

But Ali wasn't in his prime when he fought Frazier in '71.... he hadn't adjusted to his loss of speed like he would late on and he only had had 2 fights in 4 years, hardly preparation for fighting someone like Frazier...BrocktonBlockbuster49 wrote:in head to head wise ali was not the best heavyweight of the 70s.

As for Foreman... styles make fights and while Foreman would always have blown out fighters like Frazier and Norton (fighters that can't fight going backwards) boxers like Ali, Holmes and Young would always have the upper hand over George...

are u telling me that a 1970s ali beats a 1971 joe frazier, 1979 larry holmes?
i THINK NOT!
as for foreman, foreman did better in the 70s than ali did against common opponents than ali did.
my rankings are mainly head to head. foreman, frazier, holmes were all in there primes in the 1970s ali wasnt and ali struggled a lot in the 70s and benefited from some lucky decisions.
the 1970s ali was great, but a peak joe frazier, larry holmes, and foreman are better.
the 1960s ali is better than all 3 though

yes ali did beat foreman, but i thought ali lost the trilogy with norton. that should be held against him.Decagon wrote:Ali-Frazier I was a very close fight that Ali easily could have won. You're also forgetting that Ali did beat Foreman.
frazier clearly won ali I, it was close but a clear win for joe
like i said, accomplishments wise ali rates # 1 in the 1970s.
however head to head wise, i cant see a 1970s ali beating a peak joe frazier(we saw what happened), larry holmes
