What if Ezzard Charles vs Jake LaMotta at Middleweight?

Post by scorpio83 »

In 1940, Ezzard Charles made his pro debut at middleweight and during his early career, LaMotta fought in the same division. However, what would happen if they ever fought at middleweight. Would Charles give "The Raging Bull" a Sugar Ray Robinson treatment? In my opinion, yes, Charles would out-boxed LaMotta for a decision in 10 rounds. What is your opinion?

I think Ezzard would edge Jake, like 6-4, 7-5, or 8-7 type fight. Though the longer the fight, the closer it would be.

If this fight were to take place, it would have to have been no later than August of '42 which was Charles' last fight at middle before moving up to lt heavy. Charles was a year older than LaMotta, had an extraordinary amateur career and had already faced Ken Overlin, Teddy Yarosz, Anton Christoforidis, Kid Tunero and Charley Burley (twice), whereas LaMotta really hadn't taken on much. Moreover, LaMotta drew in 10 with jose Basora in May of '42, lost in a rematch a month later and then in August - in Charles' last fight at middle - Basora got knocked out in 5 by Charles. So it does seem Charles was a few good steps up on Jake at this time - experience-wise - and a good, solid 10 round win for Charles looks the case in this fight, with Jake letting him know he is there, but just not enough yet to give a realistic chance.

I'd definitely favor Ezzard to take a clear decision in this match
