Jamel Herring Signs With Top Rank, Will Fight on Crawford-Horn

Marketing manager JC Casarez has advised BS.com that lightweight contender Jamel Herring (16-2) has revamped his team.

In addition to bringing on Casarez, the 2012 US Olympian has signed a promotional agreement with Las Vegas based Top Rank.

In December, Herring parted ways with his long time trainer Mike Stafford and brought aboard Brian "Bomac" McIntyre - who is best known for his work with unbeaten two-division champion Terence "Bud" Crawford.

Herring, who is a former Marine, has fought his entire career under the guidance of Al Haymon and the Premier Boxing Champions banner.

The 32-year-old has lost two of his past three fights after beginning his career 15-0. In August he dropped an unanimous decision to Ladarius Miller (14-1) on a card put on by Miller's promoter Mayweather Promotions and in his prior fight he stopped Art Hovhannisyan (17-4) in three rounds.

Casarez said that Herring will make his Top Rank debut on the Terence Crawford-Jeff Horn undercard. Various media reports have earmarked the WBO welterweight title fight for April 21st at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Herring was an amateur standout who won a 2012 Amateur National Championship the same year as his Olympic run, Herring fights out of Cincinnati and is originally from Coram, New York.

He was the only United States Marine to compete at the London Olympics and the first active duty marine to qualify for the US boxing team since 1992.

In the amateurs, he fought Daniel Jacobs, Jesse Vargas, Mike Reed and several others.

His unbeaten 15 fight win streak including triumphs over Luis Eduardo Florez, Yakubu Amidu and Hector Velasquez. The former member of the U.S. Marine Corps suffered his first career defeat at the hands of Denis Shafikov in July of 2016 - and after that he bounced back with the win over Hovhannisyan in February of 2017.

Does this have any effect on Herring’s ties with Haymon, since the PBC chief isn’t a promoter (i.e. is it a similar situation with Jacobs and Khan signing with Matchroom)?

Considering Haymon isn’t a promoter, I guess this doesn’t affect that situation.

I doubt it. Haymon is just a manager/advisor. Not a promoter.

Gotta respect any kid that served our great nation. Especially if he was a Marine.
Dont think i never seen this kid fight, but I like him already. If he was a Marine, he's
a hard worker. that aint no lie

I have to wonder what Top Rank is seeing in him. Guy got demolished, I think he was the favorite, against Shafikov.
