Sad to see a couple of big names ( and especially a legend like Shavers) get humiliated by a couple of truck drivers.

Carman whooped it up post-fight like it was a terrific accomplishment blasting out the obese, 51 year old Ruddock.

At least Yates, simply a terrible fighter, seemed respectful after polishing off the career of the 50 year old Shavers.

Why don't commissions do their job and keep out of shape, ancient fighters out of the ring?

THE WORST... in my opinion... Was 1992 when poor Jerry Quarry was told that it was just for a movie... He climbs into the ring and fights some bum and gets whacked around.

At least Coetzee wasn't simply cannon fodder in his farewell to boxing.

It was a very competitive fight. It helps of course that Barkley was past his prime and well above his best weight.

But when you see Shavers and Ruddock getting blown away by guys who couldn't lace their shoes without help, then Coetzee's performance wasn't so bad.

It would have helped if Coetzee came in at a decent weight. Carrying over 250 lbs was far too much. Probably more than 30 lbs above his prime weight.

Of course Barkley scaling in at 230 probably evened things up.

But it was an entertaining scrap.

Joe Bugner getting a 'respectful' hiding from Scott Welch in an empty German Sports Centre in 1996.

Welch absolutely hated doing the necessary on Joe who had been a pro for 29 years by that point and the fight was a full 9 years after he'd bravely got in the ring with Bruno and doing ok for a few rounds.

Bugner still bossed a few fights down under after the Welch fight but really he was just a 'name from the past'' for Scott's record and it all happened in front of the cleaner and the bar staff.

Bugner would continue to fight for several more years.

Of Welch he said that only Frazier and Lyle hit him harder.

I guess Bugner must have completely forgotten about getting shellacked by Earnie Shavers.

yeah, but Coetzee was only 43 years old in that fight compared to 51 yr old Razor Ruddock and 50 year old Earnie Shavers.
I thought Roberto Duran fought pretty competitive for a 50 year old man tho.

ONLY 43!

There's not a lot of 43 year old boxers. And the ones who hang around at that age aren't usually very successful. Throw out the Alien Bernard Hopkins.

It was balanced by Barkley being 37 and about 70 lbs over his best weight.

Duran was a fighter of a different breed. Just a one of a kind natural fighter who could probably defend himself in the ring at 60 if he hadn't suffered major injuries in that accident.

But Camacho spent the second part of his career, after Rosario, being a dull, cautious, almost scared fighter. So that mentality was helpful in enabling Duran to look very competitive that night.

yeah,I forgot to mention is the theme of this thread is of boxers 38 years old and older
who still continued to box, when the rules use to be you could'nt box professionally after
37 year of age.
I noticed how most of these fighters heavyweights physique really changes
and all sort of resemble each other.Being become really thick and bulky
around the thorax region as well as their speed and relfleses look like Molasis
in the Wintertime almost,as well as cognative skills going South along with thier waist-lines and pecs apparently.

He has said Shavers hit him the hardest in one interview I read, to be fair a cut was the reason that fight was stopped.

It was his last registered pro fight. This was before the ALI ACT and you could pretty much put a show on anywhere, with anyone at any time. He was suckered into believing it was all for a movie and then the guy unloaded on Quarry. Bert Sugar talks about it in a documentary on YouTube about Quarry.

I think this is a little off. They told Quarry if his comeback was successful, they may make a movie out of his life. That doesn't mean Quarry thought the fight was a movie.

He has said Shavers hit him the hardest in one interview I read, to be fair a cut was the reason that fight was stopped.

I was just rewatching the bout and actually Bugner acquitted himself decently.

He pretty much outboxed Shavers for a good portion of the 1st round until he got hit with a right hand that staggered him. A few punches later, Shavers connected with a right uppercut and Bugner went down for one of the few times in his career up to that point.

The second round was give and take, with Shavers much more aggressive than in the opening three minutes. With his back against the ropes, Bugner was again hit by an uppercut that staggered him. The fighters tied each other up and when the clinch was broken, Bugner had a serious cut over his left eye.

I'm not sure what punch caused that cut.

The doctor examined Bugner, said the cut was too deep and the referee stopped the fight.

Bugner was 32. Shavers was 37 at the time of the 1982 bout.

this fight was studied in the Joe Bugner thread and the conclusion was
Shavers is believed (by some)to have used his not-so-clean tatic of cupping the back of the neck with his left glove and then delivering a devastating uppercut,
and the cut was caused by a head butt.
