Re: Fury's Comeback
I think the opportunity of a better payday than he'll get anywhere else will get him back in action in some way.
Whatever happens (be it falling on any of the steps back up or at the top step) , once he's back in action the results will help clear up the heavyweight picture, because in my eyes he's the linear heavyweight title holder, and that situation benefits being clearly defined for the heavyweight timeline.

How long does he keep that right.pablothunder wrote: ↑19 Jan 2018, 09:21 I think the opportunity of a better payday than he'll get anywhere else will get him back in action in some way.

I mean if lennox comes out of retirment then he is the lineal champ??
I think 2 and a half years is more than long enough for him to no longer be any champion licence or not

Tyson has got to looking at at least 5m for Joshua.
Re: Fury's Comeback
Yeah I'd agree. And AJ 10m+.

Have a rematch clause, where he would get more money.

Re: Fury's Comeback
Once Lewis was out then the order had to be re-established, he had until it was clear he wasn't coming back, it was a long while until Klitschko took the spot. I'm sure you remember.nitro5912 wrote: ↑19 Jan 2018, 10:39How long does he keep that right.pablothunder wrote: ↑19 Jan 2018, 09:21 I think the opportunity of a better payday than he'll get anywhere else will get him back in action in some way.

Fury hasn't been out of the picture for certain, he's the guy who beat Klitschko. If I had the time I'd review how long it took until Wlad was considered the bonafide top man.

Re: Fury's Comeback
When Ali and Mike Spinks fought as the lineal champion having not lost their titles, they came back as main eventers. Surely Fury can't come back on an undercard. In fact woudn't it be the first time any lineal heavyweight champion was not the main event..... ever?
Fury needs to sign with Hearn. It opens lots of doors and he'll be promoted properly.

Re: Fury's Comeback
I think Fury would get closer to £10m. Whilst he doesn’t bring the same commercial value as AJ, it would be the biggest fight ever in the UK and I’d be surprised if it didn’t over 1m PPV buys plus c.£10-£15m from the live gate. It’s also a fight that should well overseas.
Re: Fury's Comeback
Ali was Ali, an Olympic Gold Medalist who won the title by stopping the fearsome Liston & then had defended the title NINE times over 4 years & was stripped by for refusing to fight in a war (for reasons we all know).keithmoonhangover wrote: ↑19 Jan 2018, 16:02 When Ali and Mike Spinks fought as the lineal champion having not lost their titles, they came back as main eventers. To compare his situation with Fury's is stretching things.....A LOT.
Also if you look at the bill Ali came back on it contained four fights in Atlanta on a Monday night.
Willis Earls 12-11-2 L TKO 7/10 Eddie Jones 18-8-1
Richard Pittman 0-12-2 L KO 4/6 Bunky Akins 4-0-0
Rahman Ali 5-0-0 W TKO 3/? Hurricane Grant Debut
The bill wasn't important. Ali was what it was all about. Opinions had changed about the war plus he was a champion of Black Americans during a time of major change. He was a massive symbol.
As for Spinks, how is his story relevant
Re: Fury's Comeback
Didn't AJ get 15 million quid in each of his last two fights?maverick23 wrote: ↑19 Jan 2018, 16:12I think Fury would get closer to £10m. If Fury has a couple of wins & AJ has already beaten Wilder by then (or Ortiz - thinking of future timelines) then I can see them splitting a 50 million quid purse, especially if they held the fight fairly late so American audiences get a decent timeslot (again, assuming AJ has beaten Wilder & raised his profile over here).
F*ck me, that's a lot of assumptions

Because Spinks gave up his IBF title and was the undefeated lineal champion, like Fury.Taansend wrote: ↑19 Jan 2018, 16:18Ali was Ali, an Olympic Gold Medalist who won the title by stopping the fearsome Liston & then had defended the title NINE times over 4 years & was stripped by for refusing to fight in a war (for reasons we all know).keithmoonhangover wrote: ↑19 Jan 2018, 16:02 When Ali and Mike Spinks fought as the lineal champion having not lost their titles, they came back as main eventers. Re: Fury's Comeback
If we follow relevant history and protocol then Fury will be the lineal heavyweight champion until he either dies, retires, or gets beat in a sanctioned contest. If he doesn't fight in 2018 that linear status will become more dubious and in my opinion will diminish in most peoples eyes if he goes beyond 3 years without fighting but he's still the man who beat the man who beat the man etc . . . . . . .nitro5912 wrote: ↑19 Jan 2018, 10:39How long does he keep that right.pablothunder wrote: ↑19 Jan 2018, 09:21 I think the opportunity of a better payday than he'll get anywhere else will get him back in action in some way.

. . . . AJ is clearly the premier HW right now and if he gets the WBO it will strengthen his claims even more, if he can take the WBC as well then we could see him being universally acclaimed as the new lineal champion on sheer weight of titles and current activity. There are no written rules about the linear champ status as far as I know, its just a generally accepted sensible view within the sport.
Re: Fury's Comeback
Are you talking about versus Cooney? That was a huge fight. Plus Spinks had only been out of the ring for 9 months & didn't balloon up to 27 stone or get banned or have drug use or say he was done with boxing because of depression. It's really not the same, mate.keithmoonhangover wrote: ↑19 Jan 2018, 16:27Because Spinks gave up his IBF title and was the undefeated lineal champion, like Fury.Taansend wrote: ↑19 Jan 2018, 16:18Ali was Ali, an Olympic Gold Medalist who won the title by stopping the fearsome Liston & then had defended the title NINE times over 4 years & was stripped by for refusing to fight in a war (for reasons we all know).keithmoonhangover wrote: ↑19 Jan 2018, 16:02 When Ali and Mike Spinks fought as the lineal champion having not lost their titles, they came back as main eventers. If a boxer retires they are no longer the linear champion.
Tyson Fury retired.

Re: Fury's Comeback
Depends what you call retired Lee? Many a boxer has 'retired' and come back within months or even days, sometimes several times! Ray Leonard had more comebacks than Frank Sinatra ffs. That said, you could make a case that Fury retired when he lost his licence and didn't immediately appeal but as I said, there are no written rules regarding lineal champs so its all moot.leejonesjnr wrote: ↑19 Jan 2018, 17:07 If a boxer retires they are no longer the linear champion.

I guess most boxing fans still regard Fury as the lineal hw champ? Maybe someone should start a thread with a poll

I'm not totally disagreeing here. All hail Tyson Fury, the first man to relinquish the lineal heavyweight championship of the world via Twitter it is then!leejonesjnr wrote: ↑19 Jan 2018, 17:27A man who doesn't have a boxing license and declares that he is retired.Jackson328 wrote: ↑19 Jan 2018, 17:17Depends what you call retired Lee? I do wonder if a Lineal Heavyweight Champion has ever not been the main event at any point in history. I can't think of one, but I only really go back as far as Jack Johnson, before that, I'm a bit patchy.Taansend wrote: ↑19 Jan 2018, 17:38![]()

I don't think it will matter.tiny_acres wrote: ↑14 Jan 2018, 15:16This is all going to depend on opponent and venue.keithmoonhangover wrote: ↑14 Jan 2018, 15:14 Assuming it's against a non-Brit. How many tickets does it sell?
No clue without knowing these
Look at David Haye; He returned against a car crash dummy & an extra from The Walking Dead, but still managed to put on two big sell-out events.
Fury should give Haye a call.
