Audley's legacy - the only belt he ever won was a WBF one !

Post by JimJim »

He can hardly come back home and relaunch himself domestically, and he's have to sign with allegedly in order to get cracks at the British or Commonwealth title, or with a German promoter to get a crack at the European title, and none of this is likely as (a) he's got zero marketability or drawing power (b) these promoters probably won't want to bother with him (c) what's the point, anybody half decent will beat him, even at British level.

So, it's probably the end of the road for Audley. What's shocking is that, looking back, the only belt he ever won was the WBF title. What a sorry, sorry legacy. In 1998, Joe Bugner held this title. Other holders include Adilson Rodrigues, Johnny Nelson, Joe Hipp, Lionel Butler and Bert Cooper. Not exactly hall of fame material.

What does the future hold for him ? I can see him becoming a mainstay on reality TV shows, his notoriety might get him that far; celebrity big brother, that jungle show, and so on. He's surely made too many enemies within the sport to get any work within boxing, I mean, personally I would not want to listen to him as a commentator or pundit and I wouldn't advise any youngster to let him train them.

Perhaps the lasting legacy will be "how not to do it". Audley got it wrong on so many fronts, there's a lot of lessons to be learned.

One last thing, I am an avid reader of books and I've occasionally seen his book going for just a pound in bargain basement stores. It originally retailed for eighteen quid, I think. Right now, a quid is a lot of money to pay for an Audley Harrison book :o

The British Heavyweight title is in a bit of a limbo at the moment. Its supposed to be Skelton vs Gammer, but that's not likely.

Sprott vs Gammer? Sprott is supposed to be defending the EU title vs fellow Brit McDermmot. Considering that the EU title previously launched Sprott to fight for the big European title, he might stick with that belt.

So who will fight Gammer, Krence? (already lost to Gammer)... Steeds (already lost to Gammer).

Audley didn't get KO'd so isn't suspended and ran Danny Williams to a split decision.

If Harrison wants to continue then he has as much as a claim to fight Gammer as Steeds or Krence.

His bandwagon came off the rails last December & now it's laying in ruins, unable to be repaired.

He was a busted flush a long time ago, but there is no way back for him, now that he has been exposed to all the world.

No promoter would be stupid enough to sign him, no telly network would be crazy enough to screen his fights & even his greatest jockstrap carriers would be hard pressed to big him up anymore.

He's made his money now; he should just go & disappear into the ether & be a small footnote in boxing history (he doesn't even deserve that!). :box: :TU: :box: :box:

Personally, speaking just as a boxing fan, I've no problem with Audley coming back home and challenging for the British title, and I think that with his record, he should be able to get a crack at it more or less straight away, politics aside of course.

And once the dust has settled on Audley's latest own goal, maybe Sky or ITV would televise him in a domestic title fight, even if only for the "rubber necking" viewer fascination factor - tune in to see if Audley can stop the rot, or if his career will go even further down the pan. Both TV companies have televised far worse, even this year, than Skelton vs Audley, with the British heavyweight title at stake.

When Wayne Alexander fought Takaloo a couple of years ago, it seemed to me that they only fought each other because, career-wise, they had hit rock bottom, both suffering bad losses. They were matched against each other and the fans got a short but exciting fight with an awesome finish.

So maybe Audley can come again. When I posted this topic, my point was that, surely, Audley will not be able to motivate himself to fight for lower purses, deal with a certain British promoter, eat humble pie, and all of the rest of it, that would come with him returning home to challenge for the domestic title. I can't see it myself, but it's certainly an option for him and I agree that the door should remain open for him if that's his desire.

I think he'll move to Arkansas and sign with Stacy Goodson.

Why does he deserve a crack at the British title?

2-3 years ago, when the BBC belatedly realised that he was a con merchant & cancelled his tv deal, he scurried off to the USA, chastising the likes of Danny Williams for staying in Britain & uttering, "it's about the world baby!"

He mocked Williams, Hide & Skelton for not having any ambition & he was off to the USA to fight the 'big boys' & become world champion.

He felt the British title was beneath him then, so why does he deserve a shot now.

He needs to start from the 4 rounders (that's all his stamina will allow him to do anyway  ) & work his way up before he gets a shot at the British title.

Good post, i remember blowing a fuse when he made that "It's about the world baby" statement and scurrying off to face the likes of Quinn Navarre on club show undercards, arrogant wanker, now he's been exposed as a waste of time, Fraudley indeed...what an apt nickname.

On the subject of the WBF heavyweight strap, did anyone here see the title 'fight' between an aged, flabby Boneclutcher Smith and an aged, flabby Joe Bugner?

It was the most appauling, short lived (thankfully) spectacle, that for some reason was deemed worthy to be screened on Sky Sports!!?
