Clinton Woods

Post by Taansend »

I know we have a few chaps involved in the Northern Boxing scene on here.

Is Clinton Woods still in the game or has he faded away? Hopefully he made a few quid & kept hold of it. He was a decent fighter with a massive heart.

There is a great facebook group called Boxing Remembering The Good Old Days. Im sure he is a member. Its another select closed group though so have a look Taansend and see if you can join it. Full of ex British boxing. Its a decent one this group.

There was some discussion of Woods on that ‘Ex-boxers current jobs’ thread a few weeks back seems that he’s doing well with his gym after some difficult times. Which reminds me I must pick up his book it was recommended to me on there...

Yeah I go his gym every so often. It's fitness with boxing rather than boxing. Good for people like me that like boxing but not so much being punched :-)

He does train one of my mates brother who is the central cruiserweight champion

I remember watching Clinton defend the IBF title v Glenn Johnson at Bolton Arena a few years ago, I was sat by a group of lads from Sheffield and they irked some of the locals who where there supporting Amir Khan as they got off at the end of the Woods/Johnson bout. The Woods fans were peeved that Khan was topping the bill in a routine bout despite the Woods/Johnson fight being for a world title. I think Ricky Hatton was in the Woods corner too for some reason but he was so fat that lots of people didn't recognise him!

The sounds of "Come on clinton, come on clinton" accompanied by someone playing a trumpet are indelibly burnt into my brain - it may possible be one of the last recollections that goes through my head when I'm on my deathbed.

I was sat right next to the corner for Johnson 3. It was a great fight. To be fair, I thought he just lost it.

Did Khan top the bill? I thought he was way down it and his fans were causing trouble afterwards for the rest of the night? Remember a few people getting carted off in ambulances.

Great night with comical moments - M'baye winning the WBA title but they only had a WBC belt so they stuck a posit note saying WBA over the WBC logo. Genius. Always thought Woods lost that fight but everyone who watched on telly said he did just enough.

Khan topped. Can't remember which Khan night at that venue when Foster Jr. was on, but Khan fans didn't get away with anything that night. Full Salford team out. I was worried drinking with them! Jennings had a lot there as well.

Was that the Skelton vs Krence card? Remember going and marvelled at all the 'characters' that night. You're right its the quietest and best behaved from Khan's supporters I've ever seen!

Nah Skelton v Krence was Khans debut. I was at that show. Krence was a late replacement, I can’t remember who was supposed to box Skelton.
There was crowd trouble between Asian Amir Khan fans and white morons.

The Asian guys involved in the trouble MAY have been, the white guys DEFINITELY were. Racist chanting is a bit of a giveaway. Seemed mainly in the bleachers opposite side of the ring to where I was.
Yes there was a bomb scare but I suspect that fast evacuation was top of the agenda so who knows if there REALLY was a tip off or threat.

Micky, purely out of curiousity, but if you know, what is the score with that Salford 'scene'? Obviously saw all the reports in the aftermath of Paul Massey's killing and there are clearly as you say some 'heavy' guys involved, but is there also an element of media hype?

Yip Mickey was referring to the Khan card with Foster and Jennings on it and I think that was the Skelton vs. Krence card. Only went as my mate was offered the Skelton fight and I got a ticket on the off chance he'd take it but he didn't!

Been to lots of Khan fights and find his supporters are the main instigators of lots of the trouble.

Me and my pals used to go to Bolton now and again, it's wierd how they react if there is a few of you and they realise you're from Salford, it's got a real rep as a hard city where everyone likes a scrap.

Bernard o'mahoney is bringing a book out on it soon. Yes, I know he's a dick, but I know his son, who's a bit of a dick as well. Serious players The Salford Team. No jokers or hype at all.

Non boxing fans who follow one particular boxer are always the worst. Wasn't it Rob McCracken v Steve the Viking Foster* that had Brum v Citeh fans kick off.

And that ain't the only time.

p.s. Just had a look at that bill. Decent card.
