Where are we classing SRR as being from?

Especially in the old days lots of fighters seemed to move during childhood, should we just go off birthplace or where they grew up or fought out of?

That is always tricky, isn't it? If you go where they fought at, most guys would be Nevada, New York or New Jersey. On the other hand, if you go by where they born, it isn;'t that acccurrate becasue many lived when they were young.

I guess the best way is where they lived most of their life, at least while they were still active.
Anyway, I an nominating:

Kentucky - Muhammad Ali. (with all due respect to Marvin Hart.)
Maryland-Ray Leonard
Massachussetts- Sam Langford
Michigan-Ray Robinson
Minnesota- Mike Gibbons
Mississippi- Archie Moore
Ohio-Ezzard Charles
Pennsylvania -Harry Greb

This is going to be tough, argumentative. - Lets start with is Joe Louis from Alabama or Michigan?

If it is Alabama, then that's a no brainer; but if it's Michigan then who Louis or Robinson?

We should start a sub list: which State has produced the most ATG?

How about New York: Hector Camacho, Gene Tunney, Jake La Motta, Tony Canzoneri, Carmen Basilio, Rocky Graziano, Mike Tyson, Benny Leonard, Lou Ambers, Floyd Patterson, Jose Torres, Carlos Ortiz, Riddick Bowe, Maxie Rosenbloom, Tiger Flowers, Johnny Dundee, Jimmy Carter . . . and more. Can any other State come close?

At least from the list above I will call New York for Gene Tunney over Benny Leonard. That should piss somebody off. ;-)

yea the birth vs. resident thing is a problem: Tyson from Nevada not Brooklyn? What made Tyson the fighter he was, Nevada or Brownsville?

and Tunney was from Greenwich Village, (in the end he married money and moved to Connecticut.)

Ace Hudkins is a good find. :TU:
Agree with Al Perno that Tyson and Tunney are really from New York.
Sam Lanford was born in Canada. I have never been able to find out when he moved. His first recorded fight at the age of 19 was in Boston.
How in the world did Young Montreal make the Top 100? To be honest, I never heard of him. I looked him up in the database, and he a couple of nice wins but was really just a journeyman.
Michael Nunn is #46 fighter of all time? I do think he underrated by many people, but #46 seems like quite a stretch. He probably is the best from Iowa though.

Was surprised to see Jack Johnson listed as from North Carolina. Maybe I am forgetting something here.

Mayweather Jr. number one fighter of all time? Personally against Mayweather I would bet on SRR. SRL, Duran, and several of the older fighters as well, Barny Ross, Jimmy McClarnin and Benny Leonard . . . to take Mayweather. Hell I would even lay-off an Ike Williams-Mayweather fight because I am not sure Mayweather could handle Williams. Great fighter but the GOAT, I can't agree.

Mayweather was a Super Featherweight, the fact you first went to welterweight ATGs (SRR, SRL) to match him shows just how good he was.

Not a current fan just a history geek; I thought Mayweather fought most of his big fights at 140+ - was unaware that he was campaigning at 130 -but if so, you are correct, comparisons against SRR and SSL may be unfair (Didn't SRR start out at lightweight as well?) but what then of Duran, Leonard, or Ross - are they still too big?

I'd say they are fairer comparisons. I don't think he was the best ever, but he was very good, and he might have had the best career ever (which is mroe what Boxrec ranks)

The rating system has always been bizarre. Just looking at some of the guys in the top shows that. It also gets tweaked occasionally. (At one time, Jimmy Bivins was #1.) It doesn't seem to put enough stock into the stage of an opponent's career, which of course helps Mayweather.

Indiana could be tough. There was Jack Dillion, Kid McCoy, and Tony Zale. Not quite at their level, but Marvin Johnson was from there as well.
