Round-By-Round: Oleksandr Usyk vs. Mairis Briedis - 27 January 2018

Virgin media claim not to have the rights to the channel but they were advertised as showing it. They have shown all the other cards, something has gone off, whether Kalle has put the price up or what I don't know but they aren't showing any more of the series.
Re: Round-By-Round: Oleksandr Usyk vs. Mairis Briedis
Just sitting down to watch this now. Can't wait.
Rd 1 - Usyk busier but mainly pawing with the right hand. Briedis landed a few good jabs and straight right hands.
10-9 Briedis.
Rd 2 - Really good round. Could go either way but just lean towards Usyk. Started to bring the left to the body into play.
19-19.
Rd 3 -Usyk round. His engine and legs were superb in the Huck fight but occasionally feel as though his movement is a little too bouncy. Started to establish his jab here though. 29-28 Usyk.
Rd 4- - Another close one and Usyk was more active but Briedis landed some really nice single shot counters that caught my eye a bit more. Was a time with about a minute to go when I thought he looked a bit tired, wonder if he can sustain this pace. 38-38.
Rd 5 - Really good round. Usyk gets the better of it. Briedis is showing some good skills, when Usyk is guilty of pawing with the jab Briedis is quick to counter with the straight right lead. He caught him with one early that led to a good sustained attack but Usyk went through the gears and was well and truly on the front foot in the last couple of minutes. I think I prefer Usyk when he's aggressive. Starts to use his jab really well and is excellent at moving his feet to make his opponent fall short before coming back with that long left hand. 48-47 Usyk.
Rd 6 - Close round again. Just lean towards Briedis for his work on the inside. Landed a couple of lovely right uppercuts and mixed the hooks in well. Impressive round from the Latvian as I sensed that Usyk might start to pull away. Serious fighters. Level at the halfway point. 57-57.
Rd 7 -Loving this fight. Momentum keeps shifting. Usyk round for me, keep thinking the pace is starting to tell on Briedis who threw less this round but always does enough to keep Usyk honest. The Ukranian was sitting down on his punches a bit more and when he does so that right hand is brilliant. 67-66 Usyk.
Rd 8 - Briedis came back into it late on but Usyk was on top for much of the round, forcing Briedis back to the ropes and peppering him with jabs. Usyk sets a phenomenal pace for a Cruiserweight and that's just giving him the edge for me.
77-75 Usyk.
Rd 9 -Briedis rallies again! Thought he was tiring but battled back in the second half of the round with some nice counters and sealed the round on my card with a big uppercut at the end. Showing massive heart. 86-85 Usyk.
Rd 10 - This fight is brilliant. The kind of fight that makes you a fan of both fighters. Briedis throws a lovely right uppercut, he's really impressed here but I just lean to Usyk in a close one. More active throughout. 96-94 Usyk.
Rd 11 - Both men holding their feet a bit more and beginning to stand and trade. Briedis just won't take no for an answer here, he really dug in and was actually able to avoid many of Usyk's big shots while landing some thudding blows of his own. 105-104 Usyk.
Rd 12 - Amazing fight. Usyk just seemed to find that extra gear to get him through, even then Briedis put up one last stand with a couple of big right hands. Was that the first clinch of the fight in the last round?
Final score: Usyk 115-113 Briedis.
Both deserve huge credit. Briedis was superb and his stock definitely goes up despite suffering his first defeat. Didn't expect him to push Usyk so close. He matched Usyk for much of the fight but Usyk's engine just seems to give him that X-factor over other world class fighters. His resume for 14 fights is incredible. Beat an undefeated Glowacki in Poland, stopped Huck in Germany, beat an undefeated Briedis in Latvia. Plus wins over Mchunu and an undefeated Hunter in the US. If he goes on to win the tournament then he's up there with the best Cruiserweights of all time and has to be in the P4P discussion.

Usyk is best traveller at the momeny. Fights anywhere and will finish this tournament in Jeddah. Last time he fought in Ukraine was before he fought Glowacki.
