Saul 'Canelo' Álvarez vs. Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin II - May 5, 2018

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

A sequel to the most anticipated boxing event in years will arrive on Cinco De Mayo as Lineal and Ring Magazine Middleweight World Champion Canelo Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KOs) and WBC/WBA/IBF/IBO Middleweight World Champion Gennady "GGG" Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KOs) will clash in a historic and highly anticipated 12-round rematch Saturday, May 5. The event will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View beginning at 8:00 p.m. ET/5:00 p.m. PT.

Details regarding venue and tickets will be announced shortly.

"I'm delighted to once again participate in one of the most important boxing events in history," said Canelo Alvarez. "This second fight is for the benefit and pleasure of all fans who desire to see the best fight the best. This time, [Gennady] Golovkin won't have any excuses regarding the judges because I'm coming to knock him out."

"I am ready to battle Canelo again and am happy he took this fight again," said Gennady "GGG" Golovkin. "This is the fight the world wants. This is the fight boxing deserves. I didn't agree with some of the judges' decisions in the first fight. This time there will be no doubt. I am leaving the ring as THE middleweight champion of the world."

"Canelo vs. Golovkin 2 will be boxing's biggest and best event of 2018 as these two elite fighters once again go head-to-head to determine who is the best middleweight in the world," said Oscar De La Hoya, Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. "I expect we will see even more fireworks in the rematch as both fighters know there more is at stake now than before."

"This is the fight boxing fans have been waiting for since the controversial outcome of last September, and the ONLY fight Gennady has wanted since that decision," said Tom Loeffler, Promoter of Gennady "GGG" Golovkin. "Gennady is ready for this historic record-tying 20th title defense where he will demonstrate his superiority over Canelo. Gennady is on a mission to prove he is still the best middleweight in the world today and one of the best fighters of his era."

"It's a special moment for the sport when two of boxing's most accomplished competitors-both in their prime- agree to meet again in the ring to settle who is the man in the middleweight division," said Peter Nelson, Executive Vice President, HBO Sports. "Canelo vs. GGG 2 is the boxing event of the first half of 2018 and we are pleased to present it live on HBO Pay-Per-View."

I'm sure most of us were expecting an announcement sooner rather than later, it's official now.

Ok Awful poster. If Canelo fights like he did in the first he will lose. Hopefully the judges get it right this time.

All Canelo has to do is fight a fraction better than last time to get a decision, however just or not. Not really going on a limb, betting on the house.

Will there be judges appointed? If so I have very little interest. If yes I will just stream it for free and then shut it off before they read the scorecards. GGG clearly needs to win 10 rounds to get his hand raised. 9 will be good enough for a draw. 8 and he loses a split. 7 and he loses unanimously.

I understand that WWE wrestler/actor The Rock (Duane Johnson) cut a promotional video to officially announce the bout.

Supposedly as some sort of favor to HBO.

Does this indicate that promoters and broadcasters feel a wrestling style buildup is necessary to fuel interest in the rematch?

Although nobody admits it, GBP and HBO had to be very disappointed in the PPV numbers from the first fight.

Although I've never come across any official figures (even though the first fight took place more than 4 months ago) Canelo-Golovkin 1 is rumored to have been purchased by between 1.3 and 1.5 million fans.

Pre fight expectations were in the 2.5 million + range.

So with the Rock on board, you now wonder if attention-getting WWE histrionics are going to be part of the promotion.

The buildup to the first fight was very low key, even dull. Especially compared to what Mayweather and McGregor offered up on their promotional tours just months earlier.

Canelo and Golovkin aren't exactly scintillating personalities. They don't catch your eye outside the ring.

Maybe a little outlandish pro wrestling style hype is exactly what's needed to whet the public's appetite for the second go-around.

Canelo has learned GGG. Golovkin is not that boxer, who will change his style. All that Canelo needs is to engage more, than in the 1st fight. Furthermore, judges will be on his side again.

There was no signs of stamina issues. It looked like, he had a lot left in.

I'm not really as excited for the rematch than their first encounter. This is strictly because the end of the first match left a bad taste in my mouth.

I watched the fight.
I know the signs.

Canelo closed the fight with a flourish.
His performance in rounds 11 and 12 put on exclamation point on a decisive win.

Even many of his detractors acknowledged that. He took it to a weary Golovkin, who appeared to be the more tired of the two.

Usually fighters who strongly finish the final rounds of a 12 round bout, aren't experiencing any stamina issues.

"Canelo has stamina problems," is the predictable chant of those who desperately search for a weakness in the Mexican's armor.

It's not stamina. It's something called pacing. It's employed by most intelligent boxers as strategy.

Maybe you just don't know the signs.

I would love to see Canelo engage more. Golovkin will have to stop him then even if he loses an opportunity of another rematch.

canelo does have stamina shortcomings imo. thats why he has to pace himself so strictly. he did end well but he had a stretch of middle rounds where he didnt do nearly as much as he shouldve. when he actually worked he was by far better.

but i dont think he needs to do a whole lot more. just another burst or two a round. he probably learned from last fight. he has more room to improve and gggs older now.

ggg gave everything last fight and still didnt win,.

No, Canelo fought in spots. Yes he had energy at the end but that's only because he spent long stretches in rounds conserving energy like Pac now does. Canelo cannot fight 3 minutes of every round and GGG knows this.

But I am afraid he is training for getting on his bike again:

There will be no war on May 5th.

Canelo has his game plan and no reason to abandon it. It will be a question of whether GGG can catch up with Canelo a lot better than he did last time or whether Canelo will have an even better bike this time.

Golovkin needs to hire the fleetest of foot sparring partners or else his pockets will be picked again.

Its difficult to remember the last time anyone wanted to stand and trade with GGG. Probably difficult for them as well.

And does he need to push forward 3 minutes of every round? I said, he should engage more, but that should have a reasonable limit.

Yes. If GGG is coming at him at all times of every round, Canelo would need to up his activity level to really win. And also if GGG manages to tire Canelo out, he will end it.

Some fights should probably have two polls, what do you think will happen and what do you think will "happen."
