Sad news.

Gary won and lost the national welterweight title about 3 times.

Would have been around 80 years of age by my calculations.

RIP Champ.

If possible, can you find out whether recent or ending 2017, which I'd like to insert in his profile.

Anton....

A couple of older Gladstone articles on Mr Cowburn refer to him as a former Empire champion too. May have missed it but couldn't see any fights listed as such on his record. Any chance you can double check that for his profile?

I flicked link to this topic to historian John Hogg (current ANBF Qld event supervisor/inspector) who has been keeping records since he was 14.........now 71. He may contribute to this topic or email me. It'll take a bit of time, as records (boxes) of that era are in storage.

I can remember listening to the Cowburn / Barnes fight on the radio as a child. Towards the end Tiger Black was saying "Stop it, stop it he (Barnes) can't win this fight."

Gary Cowburn beat George Barnes twice, the first being the fight after 3 time Empire champion Barnes lost his title for the last time to Brian Curvis.
