Its an exhibition. I cant remember who he is up against. Its Charlie Allum, Andrew Jeptha, Henri Marchand, and Pat O'Keefe. I believe he is up against Jeptha. He doesnt look to impressive. Primitive. But it was an exhibition and you can tell they are partly just playing around and trying to make it look good for the camera.

As you say, it could well be just a staged thing for the camera.

In any case, it must be pretty rare footage. Do you have any other pre-war British boxers on film?

Some, not a ton (Im sure a ton doesnt exist). I have some rare footage of Willie Lewis against a guy I believe to either be Jewey Smith or Sid Russell. I also have another film of a guy who looks a whole lot like Andrew Jeptha but I am not certain its him. The time period is correct but it could just easily be someone unknown. Those are some of the things that stand out as rare. Of course I have some of the stuff on Wilde, TKL, Moir, Wells, O'keefe, etc etc. But most of that stuff is not too rare.

If you are interested in the period there is a documentary called 50 Years of British Boxing. Its excellent and features some pretty rare footage of boxers from the prewar era. It was filmed in the 50s.

I certainly am interested in British boxing of that period - particular the 1920s and '30s. I've got plenty of research material but very little in the way of film.

D'you have any idea where I might get hold of a copy of '50 years of British boxing'? Thanks.

Jewey Smith was my great grandfather. I would love to see any footage or pictures you have of him.

I'm a great grand son of Charlie Allum is a copy available to buy or is the original available , cheers ricky

some even lost their lives.
One was Fred McKay aka Fred McLaglen (Victor's brother).
I'm not sure of the details but I think he was killed or missing in action in France.

For some reason you don't hear much about boxers who served in world War I. Georges Carpentier did. Any other notable names that did?

English HW William Ian "Iron" Hague did ( who was only the second fighter to ever floor Sam Langford).
Hague was gassed at Ypres in France but survived but had permenet health problems afterwards.

can anyone find out more info about which Battle and when he was killed in France reportedly ?
I think his brother Victor wrote a book,maybe the answer is in there.
