Mikey Garcia - undisputed LWW champion 2020 ?

Post by ValMar »

I believe Mikey is capable to do it. After Crawford's moving up, LWW is pretty weak weight division, frankly I can not see any fighter beating MG ( IMO Lomachenko is too small for 140)......
What do you think about ?

He definitely could. Prograis and Taylor are becoming respectable names, though.

In 2 years, I figure Garcia will be chasing bigger game in the welterweight division.

Right now it looks like he would be spinning his wheels at super lightweight.

Like most fighters, he'll follow the money.

True. Prograis has a good test coming up soon.

No. Don't make light of how rare it is to become an undisputed champion. Unless a fighter already has 3+ belts in a particular division, or if he is already scheduled to unify all 5 belts, it is stupidly premature to speculate about something like this.

theres always a lot more guys good enough to become undisputed than there are actual undisputed champs

lots of political and financial barriers , etc usually in place

just look at cruiser, they basically took pretty much the best guys, yet the tourney winner still wont have all the belts due to lebedev, even though the winner will be a guy who already beat lebedev, or somone who beat that guy

Just to add, Mikey becoming undisputed at LWW is a lot better than when Crawford did it. Taylor and Prograis are looking like they'll become better names than Postol and Diaz Jr.

I can see too options for MG's boxing future (obviously, he is too big for LW).
1. Stay at LWW by the end of his career, and become the undisputed (or, at least the best boxer at division), earning solid amount of money.
2. Move up at WW, earning "big money", but losing against Spence and/or Thurman/Crawford.

Personally, I prefer the first option.

Many seem to consider an undisputed champ a guy with IBF-WBA-WBC-WBO titles. Who are you referring to as the 5th? IBO?

The fact that the WBSS seems to be ignoring the IBO would seem to strengthen the case for the 4 belts I mentioned being an undisputed crown. I just checked the latest IBO rankings & many are unknown scrubs...is there another alpha org I dont know about?

Beg to differ...Postol DOMINATED Lucas Matthysse!! And Felix Diaz' only "loss" before TC was a disputed MD to Lamont Peterson. The jury is also still out on Indongo...just because TC destroyed him doesnt mean Julius cannot still become a force to be reckoned with at 140.

Postol's showdown with Prograis on Showtime March 9 should clear up the picture a lot!! :TU:

Postol didn't dominate Matthysse. It was razor close before the KO. Diaz was a great win, but I think Prograis and Taylor are looking like better fighters. Taylor stopped Vazquez and Prograis will likely defeat Postol.

Indongo is horrible. I can't believe he ever had a belt.

Hope youre right!! I generally root for the "yank"!!

I wouldnt be surprised if the Crawford fight took a lot out of Postol, His KO of Matthysse was very impressive in the way he methodically broke down Matthysse!!

Have to agree to disagree on Indongo...he not only destroyed Trojanovsky in Russia, but dominated Ricky Burns on the Scot's home turf over 12 rounds!!

I say the Namibian is NOT done yet.

Ricky Burns is horrifically past his prime. The fact that he's still competitive shows how weak the division was. Troyanovksy looked horrible against Di Rocco before the KO. He was never proven, and I really don't think he's that good of a fighter.

Indongo loses to Prograis, Taylor, and Lipinets.

That's a dumb question. You know full well that IBO is the fifth.

Believe it or not he IS the IBO "champ", which clearly answers the question of how many world titles you need to hold to be undisputed world champ: WBA-WBC-WBO-IBF :OhYes:

So the WBSS winner will join Terence Crawford as the only RECENT undisputed world champ (Hopkins was the last before that in early 2000s, in that HBO tourney)!!

Undisputed Champs don't come along much these days. Not because fighters aren't capable, but because promoters and title orgs aren't willing.

Prograis yes, Taylor eventually but not yet, Lipinets NO > A paper champ whose title victory came over 7-loss Akihiro Kondo, who makes Ricky Burns look like a HOFer!!
