Anyone remember Bobby "The Celtic Warrior" Gunn? Challenged Enzo Maccarinelli for the WBO Cruiser title (losing in the 1st round) and is STILL fighting nowadays aged 44. He even fought Roy Jones a year ago.

He's an interesting character who took a 12 year break from professional boxer to take part in Gypsy bare knuckle fights (he's from Traveller stock).

Well anyway, his boy is now a pro boxer & challenges Fedor Chudinov - the one that gave Groves a good tussle - on the undercard of the Cruiser fight this weekend.

Bobby Gunn Jr is 9(7)-0 and has fought complete garbage so far including three blokes making their debut, five other blokes with 16 combined wins from 146 fights &, last time out, a win over a 45 year old Brazillian bloke who made his debut when Gunn was 3 years old.

And now he's going to Russia to fight an ex World Champion.

How do these fights get sanction

id expect chudinov to beat his kid easy. btw chud suffered a nasty cut vs ryan ford in december, im surprised hes back out so quickly

fedor honestly looks like sh!t to my eye but somehow he manages to be effective. got robbed hard in the sturm rematch and really gave buglioni a beating. broke groves jaw too. hes deffo better than his brother.

Its a very interesting story and career Bobby Gunn has had. He fought 19 times before his shot again Enzo but more interestingly is what was his WBO ranking to get that shot?

Gunn fought absolutely no one on his way to Enzo. you could say Gunn fought Shelby Gross, who infact fought Michael Moorer but take a look at the record and the result. Shelby while had a reasonable looking career record it was full of nothing.

Shannon Langberg had been around for ever and came over here back when the Rubix cube was in fashion to fight Mark Kaylor and give him his due he lasted 10 rounds against the faded Tommy Hearns in Tommy's farewell fight. But there wasnt much to decorate on his career record.

I cannot work out how The WBO made him a contender and gave the go ahead for him to compete in a world title fight. Its not as if The WBO were newly formed and were wet behind the ears. My only conclusion is that Enzo was supposed to be engaging in another opponent but dropped out and the WBO panicked and plucked Gunn out of the gutter to get their title fee.

Things didnt get any better when Enzo stopped him in the first, he went on and fought a 0-5 opponent so you can see his dizzy heights of climbing that ladder wasnt a priority.

He did kind of fight some 'decent' opponents after that but looking through their records its easy to see why. Gunn picked up a few 'minor' titles which made his career record look very good at least for a boxer who was no more than 'minor domestic level' which earned him another shot at a cruiserweight title, this time against Tomasz Adamek. How on earth the IBF ranked Gunn is another mystery.

I think the James Toney and Roy Jones fights afterwards were just circus fights to make Toney and Jones look good in their final hours of being a 'legend'

Again Gunn' final 2 fights to date are very complimentary until you look deeper.

All in all its a decent story and hes an interesting character.
