Liston may very well have been the ultimate "nixie fighter."

Although I recall that young Hurricane Carter might have given Sonny a run for his money.

No one seems to know how the term "nixie" came into use.

It was given to an early 20th century St. Louis street gang that enjoyed brawling with cops.

Coincidentally, Liston also did his police brawling in St. Louis, although it took place decades later.

Gullick was something of a name in the area.

Sometimes if a person is a " name " to the police they turn a blind eye to their demise, if they are not actually complicit in the death. Where I lived back in the UK, a local bully / lowlife got his head blown off in his own house as he answered a late night knock on the door.

The old bill just asked about 30 people if they had done it, and when told NO, just let them go, and said they would get in touch should further investigation turn up any evidence to implement them. The case remains unsolved more than 25 years later.

I assume this is the murder he is talking about? Its from a wikipedia unsolved murders in the UK page.

"2nd May 1998 car dealer Robin Charles Wood, 47, was shot dead on his front doorstep on Saturday 2 May 1998. Mr Wood was at home with his partner and 10-year-old son in Northolt, West London, when there was a knock on the door at around 10:40 pm. His partner Kath Pribisevic answered it to find to a man calling himself Terry and asking to speak with Mr Wood. As the victim approached the front door he was shot in the neck with a sawn off shotgun. Mr Wood bled to death at the scene on the Racecourse Estate. The suspect, described as white, aged between 25-35, 5'7 in height, of slim build, with sharp facial features and wearing an unzipped dark-coloured anorak, was seen to run into Kempton Avenue. On the 15th anniversary of the murder, detectives offered a £20,000 reward for information leading to the identification, arrest and prosecution of the person responsible."

sounds like from reading this that Ted Gullick may have had a history of being a "Nixie Fighter"
as they use to say back in the day..

Ted Gullick was a Golden Gloves Champion and at one point the HW Champion of the State of Ohio.
Earnie Shavers devotes an entire chapter in his autobiography to their fight in February 1972
which was heavily publised and I think either aired or was filmed.
I remember reading that Ted Gullick's girlfriend at the time owned a well known night-club in Cleveland.

looks to me like it may just be a collection of various newspapers articles
about Ted Gullick and Ray Anderson.

in his autobiography, Earnie Shavers writes almost an entire chapter on his fight with Ted Gullick
( which was Ohio's version of Ali vrs Frazier)
both were gym mates and fought February.1. 1972 at Fitch Stadium at Warren Ohio.
Shavers said during training Gullick drove 60 miles each way to Cleveland from Warren
to be with his very attractive girlfriend who owned a Tavern in Cleveland. (apparently he did not trust her)
Gullick use to be a bouncer there several times a week.
anyway Shavers said it must have interupped Gullick focus.

His girlfriend had owned the club.

early in his pro career, Ted Gullick was managed by a millionIare real estate developer
Ed Mears of Medina Ohio.
also sometime in late 1970, Gullick was "accidently" shot in his leg by a pistol,
which side tracked his career,.
and Gullick was scheduled to Fight Jerry Quarry on August.29.1971
in Austintown Ohio and later in October fight Aaron Estling
and the possibly Cleveland "Big Cat" Williams after that.
