Fighter Of The Month January 2018

Post by dWd »

Safe to say there's only two candidates here, Oleksandr Usyk and Errol Spence Jr, but which of the two should get top spot? Usyk for victory over the BoxRec No.2 ranked Mairis Briedis, or Spence Jr for victory over the then ranked No.7 Lamont Peterson. Oleksandr Usyk was Ranked No.1 cruiserweight by BoxRec and Errol Spence Jr was ranked No.5 at welterweight.

usyk beating an undefeated champ and top 3 cruiser, in there backyard, imo deserves it. really good fight too.

petersons okay but really 2nd tier imo. the fight was pretty bland too. to me thats not fighter of the month stuff compared to usyk unifying in a good fight on the road, vs a top guy

Usyk or Briedis.

Usyk is over Spence here, because Usyk has obviously faced a tougher challenge.

Has to be Usyk.

I'm not sure Peterson is a top 10 welter anymore, whereas Spence should clearly be ranked in the top 2. Big gulf in quality.

However close the fight was (I had it 116-112), Usyk just beat the next best fighter, in his prime, in a stacked division, without ever looking panicked. He was never going to blow away a fighter as good as Briedis. Quality performance.

For the way he fought, even in defeat, I'd have Briedis as runner up, with Spence 3rd.

Usyk for me. Defeating undefeated champion in his home in a very entertaining fight. :box: :box: :box: . Spence handles perfectly with Peterson but it is not enough compared to Usyk victory. :box: :box: :box:

Oleksandr Usyk it is then. i thought Spence' dominant performance would have some fans though.

I definitely rank Spence way above Usyk, but Usyk's victory was significantly more meaningful.

Usyk by a wide margin.

Unified his title with one of the other Highly touted Champions in a very deep division...in his opponents home country no less?

He's Fighter of the Month, and it's not even really debatable.

I mean Spence looked great in his fight, but the level of competition was much stiffer for Usyk.

Usyk, that fight was awesome. In all likelihood, might be his p4p contemporary. Briedis is that damn good of a fighter.
