Srisaket Sor Rungvisai vs. Juan Francisco Estrada - February 24, 2018

All of the details have been finalized for Srisaket Sor Rungvisai (44-4-1, 40 KOs) of Thailand to make the second defense of his reclaimed title against mandatory challenger Juan Francisco Estrada (36-2, 25 KOs) of Mexico.



The contest will take place on February 24th, as an HBO televised main event, in what is expected to be the Superfly 2 card - a second portion of the September card which featured some of the top super flyweights in a tripleheader event.

Superfly 2 will come down at The Forum in Los Angeles, California.

This one will likely be a modern-day Barrera/Morales, Pacquiao/Marquez type of fight. Both are great fighters and p4p contemporaries. Their styles mesh so damn well too. This is a legacy-defining fight for both men, and I can easily see this one being a FoTY.

I feel like I've already seen a thread about this rumor about 2-3 weeks ago. Either way, it would be an amazing match-up if it came off. One guy beat Gonzalez twice now. The other is on a long win streak that includes beating peak Brian Viloria and Carlos Cuadras. It's kind of sad how underappreciated this fight is going to be compared to some of the other fights that get hyped.

Yeah I favor him as well. Sor Rungvisai is gonna be as confident as ever, and will probably give as good of an effort as he possibly can, but I think Estrada is too skilled for him.

It's gonna be a firefight though. Sor Rungvisai ain't gonna give up his newly gained position in the sport without a fight.

Great fight! Looking forward to seeing Rungvisai again. Estrada could box his way to a UD but I reckon Rungvisai will turn it in to a brawl and wear him down. Can't wait though. The SuperFly division has got some quality match ups to deliver in 2018!

yeah disappointing that, Yafai cant afford to mess about its tough enough to earn decent money down there as it is, he been given a golden division to fight in and needs to make the most of it otherwise he will miss the boat

But will it make him overconfident as the very rugged Mexican Estrada is on a roll, having won 10 in a row since his tough loss to a younger, fresher version of Chocolatito.

Will the heavily Mexican, partisan crowd at the Forum play a role in how the judges score this bout? Judges always deny it, but a roaring crowd always has an effect on them.

This fight opened at even money, pick 'em. In the last week, however, the cash has flowed toward the challenger. Estrada is now about a -150 favorite.

Second off, does Rungivisai catapult up P4P considerations with a dominating performance via KO of Estrada? I say that he should. You won't find a boxer with 3 consecutive wins like that anywhere in boxing. This kid deserves to be in the conversation if he can pull it off.

Good take. I'd never bet against SSR. No way. He just keeps coming and I don't his jaw is granite. I can't wait for this fight and card. Hopefully, the Superfly concept catches on with other weight classes because this how you build fan interest and excitement. Take several top fighters and have them fight each other in mix match bouts for a couple of years and boom, people know each fighter and want to see these matchups more. More intriguing. Genius idea.

were I Estrada's team, I'd have a similar gameplan to the Viloria fight I think. Look to box and tuck up early, I'm not saying just give away the first 3-4 rounds but I think its likely Srisaket will have the upper hand early anyway so the key is damage limitation and let his power dissipate with early activity that hopefully doesn't do too much damage to Estrada. then gradually up the tempo, pushing him onto the backfoot, absolutely have to work Srisaket's body in the middle rounds and hopefully look to put it on him to win the later rounds emphatically. definitely do not look to go punch for punch with the Thai early on.

dominating KO puts him at worst very close to top 10, IMO. I'm not the best when it comes to these sort of lists, I don't sit down and you know have 15 candidates and eliminate by various criteria, my gut feel though is smashing Gonzalez AND estrada would have to put him in the vicinity

He catapults to p4p #1. That should be the consensus for anyone who considers themselves an expert. No one else has wins over p4p contemporaries at the moment and Rungvisai would have 2. I'd also have Estrada at #1 if he wins.

If the Thai fighter wins and wins impressively, he definitely deserves a top 10 ranking. But not #1. No way.
