candyslim wrote: ↑03 Feb 2018, 03:07 Another vote for Chuvalo who was only stopped by Foreman and Frazier. My first thought was Randall Cobb but it had escaped me that he did actually get stopped once, although I've no idea of the circumstances.
His nemesis was one Dee Collier which doesn't quite have the same impact as Frazier and Foreman when it comes to a plea of mitigation, I guess.
I am a big fan of Randy Tex Cobb. He's a very intelligent and funny guy. He has a website but it hasn't been updated in years. He graduated college at the age of 57 ten years ago. He was in a number of Hollywood movies, most famously the 1987 film "Raising Arizona". Quote from his website, "Wisecracks R Us":
"“It’s one thing to call me white and slow. But to call me a fat, cowardly, cocaine-snorting, fight fixing cheat? Who are they calling fat?”
Re: Best Chin of all time? Today?
alls those punches he took and chuvalo still talked well at that age. better than most boxers id say. i guess some ppl just win the genetic lottery when it comes to that kind of thing. loads of guys start slurring their speech having taken way less.
Re: Best Chin of all time? Today?
Yes x2x a very tough guy as well as one of the funniest. There are loads of anecdotes about him. One of my favourites ... he was addressing a convention of former boxers when he said something about how honoured and privileged he was to be here with some of the baddest n.....rs to ever lace on gloves, at which point up jumped fellow heavyweight contender and rival Reinaldo Snipes exclaiming "I resent being called a n.....r" to which Cobb calmly replied in his Texan drawl "Oh I weren't talkin' bout you Snipes. I was only talkin' 'bout the baaaaad ones"
Re: Best Chin of all time? Today?
Kell Brook has a decent chin. To the point where his face was broken, his body weakened and battered rather than him being buzzed or dropped. Which in his case has been dangerous.

GGGs chin is made of steel.Cent0089 wrote: ↑02 Feb 2018, 13:59It is very hard to hit Canelo cleanly. But he definitely can take a punch, same as GGG. Shots which put Khan and Kirkland to sleep, he takes it without problemjewboypgh wrote: ↑02 Feb 2018, 01:38 I’d go wíth LaMotta or Monzon. Monzon lost three fights out of 100, all on points, and although knocked down by Rodrigo Valdes, he got up to win and retired. LaMotta just could take a savage beating.
I couldn’t believe some of the shots that Canelo took against GGG.
Who today have the best chins? Educate me kids..Denis Lebedev can take shot too. Danny Garcia, Shane Mosley is tough as hell.
Re: Best Chin of all time? Today?
Carl Froch took some big punches
Riddick Bowe was never stopped
Riddick Bowe was never stopped
Re: Best Chin of all time? Today?
ya froch had a good chin and recovery, though probably a level below those freak chin guys who never seem to go down or really get hurt at all

Corrie Sanders hurt him more with a streight left hand at the end of the first round.jamesmcdonnell wrote: ↑03 Feb 2018, 03:15Yes, agreed, also pretty much invulnerable too, never saw him hurt aside from that monster uppercut.tigermoth87 wrote: ↑03 Feb 2018, 01:00 Vitali for me.

Re: Best Chin of all time? Today?
I'd say James Toney. Fat, past prime Toney, who started his career at middleweight, took Rahman's best punches easily. Toney really took each of Rahman's right hand punches like it was nothing. Rahman knocked out great, HUGE heavyweight Lennox Lewis with a single punch. And no matter what people say, Lewis had decent chin, he definitely wasn't glass-jawed.
Re: Best Chin of all time? Today?
Let us be honest, Lewis was at least a level above Sanders. Perhaps Saunders was more powerful puncher than Lewis, but I doubt it................Boxing Writer wrote: ↑03 Feb 2018, 15:14Yes, and Vitali said Sanders was the hardest puncher he ever fought in boxing while Lewis was his best and physically strongest opponent.

Sanders had exceptionally quick hands, think thats what made him so dangerous. Shots you dont see coming hurt a lot more.

Yes, forgot about Toney. Not surprising, the guy has a head like a bull mastiff, and has pretty much no neck whatsoever. Sam Peter couldn't even make him blink, and he had Wlad on queer street.Boxing Writer wrote: ↑03 Feb 2018, 15:19 I'd say James Toney. I still don't know how Toney EVER made MW, his head must have weight 150 pounds on it's own!.

Of course have to mention Ali.
Both one of the best chins of all time, and inhuman powers of recovery.
Just watched his fight with Shavers, my god, he took a lot of full blooded right crosses, some of them he took the sting out of my moving his head, but a lot of them he didn't, and he didn't even go down.
Ali's punch resistance was ultimately his undoing.

Ali did seem to have superhuman resistance and recovery powers. Probably explains why we are unlikely to see his like again. Many have attempted to emulate his style and failed badly.jamesmcdonnell wrote: ↑04 Feb 2018, 06:16 Of course have to mention Ali.

Despite taking more punishment in the final round against Frazier (1971) than in all of his pro career so far he was still able to finish going toe to toe with legendary Joe.
Taking all those punches from Frazier, Foreman, Shavers couldn't have helped but I believe that most of the damage was done by the ill advised use of diuretics late in his career. Today everybody understands the importance of hydration in maintaining brain health.
Especially in boxing.

Re: Best Chin of all time? Today?
It appears that damage is cumulative from blows to the head, and Ali sure took plenty, not just in those final fights. I think the fights with Frazier did serious long term damage to him, it's arguable that even during his career post the 2nd frazier fight, he wasn't quite the same man. He took shots that had devastated other fighters, round after round.Thomastearns wrote: ↑04 Feb 2018, 07:36Ali did seem to have superhuman resistance and recovery powers. Duran. Great chin aided by outstanding defense.
Some of those punches he took from Leonard in Montreal would have decapitated other welters.
Forget the Hearns anomaly. Duran's chin was a rock.

How VK took those including the Lewis uppercut, I don’t know.
In terms of chins:
GGG
Vitali Klitschko
Oliver McCall
Randall Tex Cobb
Chavulo
Valuev (although wobbled by Haye and Bindenko) never has been down
Monzon
Gassiev (after last night)
Joseph Parker and Luis Ortiz (but really untested against power punchers)
La Motta
Marciano
Kid Galvian
Hagler
Harry Greb
De La Hoya
Froch
Provodnikov
Arthur Abraham
Impossible to rank, but some serious beards here.
