Jerwin Ancajas vs Israel Gonzalez

Post by handsofstone »

Ancajas defends his IBF Super Flyweight title against once beaten Mexican Gonzalez on the Ramirez/Ahmed card this Saturday, not much on Gonzlaez's record, his only loss was a 6 rounder and only 8KOs in around 21 fights suggests he's a boxer

Looking forward to seeing Ancajas though he's fast becoming one of my favs, destroyed Conlon despite the ref having a mare, had Jamie down about 4 times, thought he looked great against Kinoshita as well, he's a classy boxer who can punch well especially to the body, would like to see him in a big fight after this, he beat a good fighter in McJoe Arroyo to win the title but the defences have been fairly poor so far

I imagine he'll deal with Gonzalez without much fuss

I thought Ancajas looked the bollocks again, won every round against a solid fighter in Gonzalez, I thought Gonzalez actually looked a decent fighter, he looks skilled and he tried to outfox Ancajas but he was always second best, Ancajas southpaw jab and straight lefts were quality and Gonzalez struggled to get out of the way of them

Ancajas does have similarities to Pacquiao, quick sharp lefties and both can generate serious power, I think Ancajas looks more of a thinking fighter than Manny though, he's patient and doesn't get excited but when he bursts into life he's explosive, he never worked the body as often as he usually does but the straight lefts done the trick all night, all 3 knockdowns came from the same shot, the last one especially was first class

I hope we get to see Ancajas added to one of those Superfly cards in the not too distant future. He'd make a good opponent for any of those guys. Cuadras, Estrada, Sor...whatever. You can't go wrong with any of those matchups.

Ancajas was a little bit too predictable for me. Would like to see him mix it up a bit more. Excellent footwork and jab. Really solid jab. He reaches a bit too much with the backhand. He stopped a tough game guy though and the stoppage was excellent. He'll only improve though and I look forward to seeing him again.

I'm always annoyed when ANY fighter gets compared to a past great, it's just horsesh*t marketing. I've already seen "The Next Felix Trinidad" about 3 or 4 times since Trinidad.

And now every single Filipino fighter for the next 40 years is gonna be "The next Pac" apparently. Or at least any Filipino fighter that shows a bit of talent.

Tim Bradley was the only one that kept it real. "Pac's an 8 division World Champion, I mean Ancajas is a good fighter and all, but come on man...we heard that about Donaire"

That was the best line throughout the whole fight.

Aye the Pacquiao references were a bit repetitive ay, I agree with Ancajas looking a bit predictable but was glad to see him pull out a top drawer finish, as Gil mentioned a fight between him and the rest of the champs would surely be boxing gold

Him and Rungvisai (spelling) would be interesting! Would like to see some sort of WBS with the superflys! That would be amazing! I get a semi just thinking of it

I'd like to see one of those Tournaments at Featherweight and Welterweight myself. A lot of the 115 pound dream matches are already happening with the Superfly cards, and I imagine they'll keep on matching those guys against each other because 115 pounders really don't draw unless it's a meaningful fight.
