As a heavyweight, I tend to rank Walcott marginally above Charles. If you include Charles' light-heavyweight career - he owned Archie Moore betwen 1946 and 1948, for example - in the assessment he comes out on top, however.

Charles is possibly the greatest Light Heavyweight in the entire history of pugilism, as a Heavyweight his skills carried over greatly. He is one of a very few men who beat Archie Moore at 175 pounds. He had a stellar amatuer career, being champion in Welterweight and other divisions in the Diamond Gloves and Golden Glove tournaments.
Charles in my opinion is the far superior boxer, but as pundit said, Walcott fought greater Heavyweights and was a Heavyweight contender for a longer time.
All their fights were close at times, but Charles edged in most.
