World Boxing Council (WBC) President Mauricio Sulaiman is a very happy man, because a brand new belt will be presented to the winner of the upcoming rematch between WBC, WBA, IBF, IBO middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin and Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.
The rematch has been finalized for May 5th as part of Cinco De Mayo weekend.
"The new belt will coincide with May 5. We are about to announce the new edition of the belt - which this year is the 'Adolfo López Mateos.' We are very happy, motivated. Last year it was the Huichol belt and that was spectacular, and this year will the belt will also be very beautiful," Sulaiman said.

The WBC are still chasing sanctioning fees, eh? Didn't they go through this whole process before for their first fight and ended up auctioning off the previous commemorative belt?
Canelo isn't going to pay sanctioning fees to the WBC, which means their belt(s) will become vacant if he is fortunate enough to beat GGG.

Does the WBC deduct the cost of the belts from the fighters' paycheck, or do they simply increase sanctioning fees to cover expenses?

Canelo probably wouldn't even pay the WBC sanctioning fees. He doesn't even want their belt.SenorPipino wrote: ↑07 Feb 2018, 11:53 Does the WBC deduct the cost of the belts from the fighters' paycheck, or do they simply increase sanctioning fees to cover expenses?

I wonder how Mexican Canelo's repeated snubs of the WBC plays with that Mexico City based organization.gilgamesh wrote: ↑07 Feb 2018, 12:25Canelo probably wouldn't even pay the WBC sanctioning fees. They've always been so in love with Mexican champions.
That coveted Adolfo Lopez Mateos belt honors a former Mexican president who actually had a hand in creating the WBC back in the 1960s.
For Canelo to shun that belt can't sit well with Sulaiman.

The WBC did Canelo nothing but favours in the past. Canelo os acting like a little baby. He fought for his first world title, the WBC 154 title at a lower catchweight. Even defending the 160 title, they let him fight and defend it at 155. Probably did him these favours because he's Mexican. And just because WBC ordered Canelo to fight GGG, he's unhappy because he wanted open negotiations and no timescales.SenorPipino wrote: ↑07 Feb 2018, 13:47I wonder how Mexican Canelo's repeated snubs of the WBC plays with that Mexico City based organization.gilgamesh wrote: ↑07 Feb 2018, 12:25Canelo probably wouldn't even pay the WBC sanctioning fees.
