Jimmy Ellis won 59 of 66 amateur fights. This is the same Jimmy Ellis that was the WBA Heavyweight Champion from 1967 to 1970 when he lost the title to Joe Frazier.
Ellis fought almost all of the top heavyweights of his era including Joe Frazier twice, Muhammad Ali, and Floyd Patterson.
Anyway, Jimmy Ellis beat Cassius Clay (AKA Muhammad Ali) as an amateur. Actually, Ellis and then Cassius Clay fought twice as amateurs with each splitting wins. Ellis also beat Leotis Martin, Johnny Persol, and Ossie Marcano during his amateur days.
Besides Cassius Clay, Jimmy Ellis lost to Wilburt McClure, Leotis Martin, and Johnny Persol while still an amateur.
Does anyone here know any more about Jimmy Ellis' amateur boxing record (any more boxers he beat or lost to)?

Re: Jimmy Ellis Amateur Record
I am in China until tomorrow, but I have a pretty good record on Jimmy's amateur career (missing a few, but not many). If you send me your email address I can send it to you in a day or two, as I am not sure if I can transfer it onto the website (I will try).

Correction: Jimmy Ellis did not beat Johnny Persol as an amateur. He did beat Persol after they turned pro.
Ellis split wins against Cassius Clay in 1957 when Ellis was 17 and Clay was 15. In 1958, Clay fought as a light heavyweight while Ellis still fought as a middleweight, so they never fought again as amateurs. Ellis still fought in the middleweight division as a pro for awhile, but then skipped over the light heavyweight division to fight as a heavyweight.
Re: Jimmy Ellis Amateur Record
Jimmy Ellis lost to Cassius Clay, Wilburt McClure, Leotis Martin, Johnny Persol, Cleo Horton (twice), and Willie Moran as an amateur. This adds up to 7 losses, which is all of his amateur losses if his listed record of 59 and 7 is correct.
